Mealy amazon

Anyone owner here own a mealy amazon? So far how is the bird character? And what's the prices in US, euro, Canada?? As I saw a petshop selling a mealy amazon tamed talking selling at SGD $2000.. by the way how do I know probably the ages???

I also do not own a Mealy Amazon! But, I have a friend that does and as stated above, she is truly a 'gentle giant.' His lady will be 46 yrs old this Spring and has been part of his home for near 37 of those years.

Mealy's like to sit back and take in the World around them. So, it is very important to keep them active! As a result of the gentle, laid back nature, it is just as important to provide them a very healthy diet.

Mealys are very rare everywhere and as a result are pricey! I have not seen a Mealy in my area available for over 30 yrs. With so few, getting pricing will be very difficult, since comparisons are just not available.

Please remember that Mealys are large and that will result in needing a Larger cage, Larger diameter perches (75 mm OD and larger). Regarding the cage, Please only look at cages with the front door the full height of the cage. Moving an unhappy Mealy in and out of a small door would not be fun!

As with near all Amazons, once they obtain Adult feathering, it becomes near impossible for determine an age much better then appears to be a Young Adult, Middle Age Adult or Older Adult.

Since any larger Parrot is a major investment, please ensure that you have access to an Avian Vet in your area or with in a distance that you are willing to travel.

I recommending seating next to your Amazon and reading the Threads aloud several times a day for several days and every few months doing it again. This will provide the Amazon a comfort with you and you will have the time to learn Amazon Body Language and a bit more about your Amazons. When working with an Amazons, I strongly recommend that you start from the position that: Its never the fault of the Amazons! Its always the fault of the Human! This position will allow you to more quickly understand what you need to change to develop a relationship with your Amazon.

I've long wanted a Mealy. I recently inquired about one a breeder had online, in the US. It was $3000.

There was one in our local bird shop a while ago. It was a baby and ran around 2k if I remember correctly

I have only seen 1 in person. They are BIG Amazons! The one I met was a very nicely behaved parrot. Met him at a pirate festival in Baltimore, and he would shake hands with strangers, but the owner was not sure about him stepping up. 2000 Sing Dollar is around $1450 USD, so not a bad price.

I don't think it a baby mealy at all.. as I see The Eye Color are mostly very bright Color.. cos amazon is young mostly are darker Color.. just happen to saw it at my local pet sho selling for $2000.. and it's a giant size!! And shop owner put it on a stand with leg chained.. mostly I Guess should be ard age 1yrs to 3yrs max. Maybe when I go to the pet shop take pics upload here!!

I saw the mealy I was shock of the sizes! USD currency are more bigger then sgd.. mealy hardly see in pet shop in Singapore. Unless imported.. local here no breeder.. mostly amazon breeder are yellow crowed, blue fronted..

I've seen one in person and it was HUGE compared to my Amazon, but Amazon is one of the smaller amazons. The mealy I saw was very relaxed, didn't appear nervous at all. And it's feet, wow, big feet! My husband said it had talons, lol! Keep us posted and best wishes for you if you get one.

I very feel like getting it! But when I see local pet shop feed seeds diets I really feel bad to the amazon.. and all those SG birdshop will always chain they birds on stand.. but might be fly off away if untame or some people will stolen it without notice..

Leg chains on parrots are very common in Asia. My last trip to Hong Kong showed the same thing, most owners ( private and commercial) used leg chains - but not all !
They are not considered safe, as you might aready know.
There are alternates ( harnesses and flight suits) available that are much safer.

It takes many years-decades for an amazons health to be impacted by a seed diet. This bird being young, if you were to take it home now and get it on a healthy diet would suffer no consequences whatsoever of a short period of time on a seed diet.

Beautiful bird BTW! I can't see why you wouldn't get him/her You can never go wrong with an amazon in general, and especially not with ones known for being such wonderful companions as mealies. Oh, and my bird has a very similar all stainless swing to the stand perch that bird is on I ordered from overseas. I'd suggest getting one. My bird loves his stainless swing, it is his favorite place to sit during the day! And being stainless, it is virtually indestructible. I have never seen one in a US pet shop, you are fortunate they are available where you live. I use the leg shackle chain to hang toys on instead of for his leg though

Harness and flight suit must be train to use it when they are young. When they grow adults is hard for them to use it. They will bite and chew it for sure.. I ever heard that chain a bird will destroy the leg or injuries it. But after all they have they reason why..

Above pic was visting the mealy amazon at the shop owner house.. seeds diet is a headache way to covert them to pellets.. stress to birds..


So above pic hard to tell the age. But roughly the age???

Ya, it's a pain for some birds, but millions of bird owners have successfully converted their birds off seed diets. Our amazon eats a fresh foods diet and while it was difficult to convert him, he is very used to it now and eats healthy foods readily. Also, it is not impossible to train an adult bird to wear a harness. Our amazon, who we rescues at around age 10, is now around 18 y/o and slowly becoming accepting of his new harness Patience and persistence is often necessary with parrots, whether young or old. They are not domesticated animals, even if the individual was captive bred, and their instincts still run on the wild side. Training them to do just about anything can be tedious, but entirely possible for the majority of individuals.

Always difficult to tell age of parrots, but the bird looks like a older juvenile to me. Likely over a year old, but likely not older than 4-5 and likely not sexually mature. Just has that 'baby' look about it still. Did the shop owner give any indication of age? Also wanted to mention, the environment the bird is in (judging from the photo) looks very clean, orderly and the bird looks to be clean and in good health as well. From what I can see of the other cages, those look well kept and clean too. I know there are differences in different countries on how pets for sale are kept, but I wouldn't be at all concerned about buying a bird being kept in those conditions. Seems the pet store owner takes good care of his/her birds.

I'm not a good training on harness suit.. yes the shop owner boss keep the parrots in clean condition. I do ask regarding on the mealy age and other info, was just being told is imported from other place. And age roughly 1yrs plus.. others more details didn't mention.. so far I try to use my hand to touch it, he/she won't bite me. Just not use to me and scare.. but he got step up on my hand.. so really plan to bring back, but just hope to learn more stuffs here before I do so.. I got a baby yellow crowned amazon was done handfeed by me and currently he is fully weaned. Age about 4mths or lesser.. also got a 11mths old Hahn macaw, and a harlique macaw. But he was a screamers end up I got to sale off, due to my baby girl can't sleep during the day time..

The bird is beautiful...changing diet is not a big deal. Takes time and effort but everything does!

Thanks! I asking the boss stop feeding him seeds. Give only fresh fruits and pellets and see he will take and eat or not. But he took some apple.. pellets only Chee abit throw.. and I offer him take palm seed oil. He got eat!!
