Hi everyone! I am new to this forum

A week ago we brought home Pablo, an 8 weeks old male blue fronted amazon. I was hoping to get some tips and advices here for his behavior.
At the first few days he was really scared and cornered and then started perching. I managed to train him a bit to step up but still he sometimes bites ( I dont show him any reaction to the bite unless its too strong so I put my palm flat in front of him). But also when he is on my fingers he is rarely relaxed. I scratch him behind his head and he really likes it but most of the time he is lowering himself and looking around to where he can jump to - like he is not happy to be on me. He is mostly relaxed on his stand. He is used to be fed from me so I guess he trusts me on a surtain level.
I wanted to know if its a common behavior for an amazon his age, because he is not that playful yet. And also what can I do to strength the trust and bond with him. He is not eating much of solid food yet so his only rewards are scratches and positive talking. His bites already hurt so I believe that now its the time to get him used to us before he grows older and his beak will be stronger too.

Thanks a lot guys, would appreciate any comment and advice/knowledge. :green::green:

Well, here you are in the Center of The Wonderful World of Amazon's. The Place where Amazon's Rule!! :D

Time to get deep into knowing your Amazon! So, the Best place to start is a the Very Top of the Amazon Forum!!! The two highlighted Threads in Light Blue will get you Started with a solid background in nearly All Things Amazons! At about nine weeks old, you have a full life time in front of you and by the way, I really mean a Life Time! Since that dear little ball of feathers could out live you and yours!

Normally, I would recommend that a 'new' owner start with Understanding Amazons Body Language. But at this point, I am going to sent you in to 'I Love Amazons -' and then into Understanding Amazons Body Language.

Rule #1: Read both aloud to your Amazon, while setting next your Amazon. Read them aloud several times a day and for several weeks! The Goal is to get your Amazons comfortable with every member of your family and all of your voices, also Amazon's Love being Read Too! In addition, by reading it aloud, you and your's will learn this stuff much faster!

Rule #2: It is NEVER the FAULT of the AMAZON! It is ALWAYS the FAULT of the HUMAN! This mind set will quickly lead you to what you are doing wrong or right and quickly correct what you are doing wrong!

Rule #3: When All Else Fails, Slow Down! If your Amazons is waiting for you, Speed it Up! At the end of the day, everything is at the Speed of your Amazon!

Rule #4: Be Brave enough to ask when things are going off the rails, Be Proud enough to put it in a Thread when things go well! Find JOY in your Amazons making tiny pieces of things you have just created for him, like a couple of minutes ago! When you get it right, time and time again -several years from now, you will come to understand the meaning /JOY of: Being Owned By An Amazon!

Rule #5: Read the two Threats! Yes, all of it and several times, even if you do not think that it is important now! Tomorrow, will be here before you know it!!!

Come Back With Specific Questions! And Again: Enjoy, you are in the Wonderful World of Amazons!

Thank you SailBoat for your reply!
I actually did read th threads before posting, thanks for that! It is very helpful to know their body language!

I have a question.. when Pablo is perching on his stand and I want him to step up, most of the time he is not interested. Should I leave him alone? I do want to respect his space but also that he will be tame.

Second question, are there tips for making my amazon trust me more exept being patient and give it time?

Thanks!

Welcome and be welcomed. Sailboats is as close to an expert on Amazons as you will find outside a Avian Vets office. Maybe closer!

And, we love pics here, so post away.

Oh, he is such a baby, look at those dark eyes! When you get a chance, if you can, replace the wooden dowel on the stand with a natural wood branch type perch - its much better for his little footies.

Okay, so just being a bit mean here. I bet that you didn't take the time to read it aloud next to your Amazon and several time, correct?

Building Trust, first starts with your Amazon becoming comfortable have your around him. Go back the to the Rules! Its never the fault of the Amazon! Remember, that in his mind! YOU took him from his Loving Home. From those he knew and Loved, and now He Needs to trust you!

Sadly, we Humans have very high expectation. When we bring 'very' young Parrots into our home, we have to create a new comfortable World around them. Think of it this way: A young Human child is removed from their loving home, after they have just switched to solid food. Think of the fear they must have. Amazon's are very smart and they have that level of understanding of what is happening around them.

If you that that level of thinking to Heart, what would you do differently today, than what happened week or so ago! Start anew, today! Build that comfortable World around your baby Amazon.

Think of it this way: Only Good Things Happen When Any Human is Around Him! You will be very surprised in the differences.

FYI: My Amazon is calling - will be back in tomorrow!

He's a beauty. Great advice above too. Make sure to get him toys. I went to Dollar Tree and bought mine alphabet blocks, paper pom poms from the party section, plastic toy cooking utensils and Chinese finger cuffs. All items to destroy. I also save toilet paper rolls and will stuff them with shredded paper and put almonds in the paper. Loop string thru it and hang. I make these in front of the birds so they see the nuts going in. They will destroy the roll foraging for the goodies inside.

These are great ways to build his comfort level and trust. And it's fun too watching them get inquisitive and excited.

Oh my..Pablo what a baby you are! and so handsome! Its never too early to start socializing Pablo to new things..slowly..people in your household..the more people who handle him the better acclimated he'll with "strangers" he'll get.
If it is warm where you are, take Pablo out with you,see how he reacts to car rides. Amy LOVES going for rides "outside?in the car?" is one of her favorite sayings.

If Pablo's wings aren't clipped ( that is a touchy subject amongst parronts on here) introduce him to a carrier and just go places with him. If you haven't done so already..his first trip to an avian vet for a wellness check would be a good start.

He is so young, probably still figuring HIMSELF out! Take it slow but be consistant..A good time to introduce him to new foods. Amazons have hearty appetites and LIKE to eat! Share your lunch/dinner with him..fruits and veggies..even some "people" food..they love cheese and scrambled eggs..in moderation of course.

A well socialized Amazon is a HAPPY Amazon! :D

Naw... love seeing the baby blue fronts! Never got to see mine as a baby, he was a mature adult when we got him. You've received some great advice so far. One thing to add, amazons are highly intelligent parrots. As Pablo grows up, make sure he has lots of mentally stimulating activities like foraging puzzles and trick training to keep that little brain working. Much like toddlers, amazons do best when being continually challenged to learn new things and enjoy doing so! Educational activities are rewarding for parrot and owner. Even my 18 y/o is enjoying learning to assemble simple shape puzzles and starting to pick up shapes and colors (albeit very slowly). With a young zon, the possibilities for learning are endless and will go so much faster than with an older one!

Thanks everyone for your tips knowledge and advices!

Pablo is much better sinced I posted here. I followed all what you experts told me and we made a good bond with Pablo! He started eating fruits and he loves music! Always trying to produce sounds when the music is on or when I play classical music with my guitar :)
We are on the right track!!

THats funny - Salty loves live music and when I bring him downstairs into the studio when we rehearse, he sings along with us. He seems to like the hornpipes and reels best, up tempo stuff. He sits right on my shoulder when I'm playing fiddle and softly peeps nd coos along with me. Pablo sounds like he is fitting in well, or rather your family is fitting into Pablo's life well.
