RV and parrots

I can't be away from Charlie for very long (so far only two nights) He doesn't like it and I hate it! I worry about him tearing up a hotel and making enough noise that they ask us to leave. So we are getting an RV so the birds and I (and the kids and my sweet fella) can travel together. I searched the forum but didn't find any threads with motor homes and parrots. Does anybody else take your birds on trips? I have a larger travel cage that Charlie uses when we go away for the weekend. The cage is about 20"x 20" x 3' tall. That would be what we take in the RV. Our travel plans are flexible and our time, for now, will be limited to a week or ten days at a time. Any experience, concerns, or practical advice before we set out sometime next spring?

What a cool idea. if its a cab over, turn that area into the bird cage! I've seen a few folks with RVs and a parrot. I dont know about parrot(s). That might get .... complex.

If there was like a door blocking the back from the front, id just put one of those hanging bead thing in front of the door to prevent him getting out the door if you open it and let him loose, and of course bird proof it.

First, Does your Amazon(s) like to travel? If you have not had your Amazon out for a day trip, you really need to that first! Our Amazon loves to travel in the SUV, its all the windows! Prior owners had been snowbirds and traveled between Northern Michigan to Southern Texas near the Gulf and back. With us, he travels at least every other weekend and we commonly do long weekends.

Second, there are restrictions in traveling with pets and if you get pulled over, you should be prepared to prove that your pets do belong to you and they (he) is current regarding Vet Exam and with dogs has all their shots. Got pulled over in the middle of nowhere and our good old boy had to much time on his hands and wanted to play with an out of Stater. Sad for him, I know the rules and had all the records on board!

Third, pack so that even a weekend trip you are covered for a least a week. If your out for a week, cover for two. This is very true for RV's, even a newer unit can leave you on the side of the road.

Fourth, DOORs, If there is a weak link to traveling with Parrot and pets in general, loosing them is always an issue. With mid -large Parrots, have them Micro Chipped. It helps to satisfy the second item above.

There are several members that RV with their Parrots, with luck they may tune it! All that said, Have Fun!!!

Charlie LOVES to ride in the car, even on longer road trips. (we travel to Austin a couple of times a year now to see family.) It is about five hours and Charlie either sits in mom's lap or rides in his travel cage burring softly to passing cars. Charlie is not chipped but the idea has advantages. We always travel with plenty of birdie food, bottled water, toys, and our birdie first aid kit. I wouldn't want Charlie just loose in a moving RV unless I was holding him. (he can get into way to much mischief) but he likes to swing on his swing in his cage when we travel and a couple of well placed boings with toys will keep him busy inside the RV when we are stopped. His harness training is coming along pretty good and he is adorable when he is out in it.

I've done I microscope amount of RV travel and have been looking at them for a while. I would comment that the space in an RV is tight. surfaces tend to convert, i.e. Table to bed. So a cage might be fine on a table during the drive, but where will it go at night or at dinner time? To travel with a bird, I would find a spot to install a built in cage or at least a couple of anchor sites. For example, if the bird can sit near a window, on the floor or on the counter during the drive, and then move the cage to a front seat at night or when parked so it isn't in the way. It would help to take a cage on board when looking at an RV, see where it fits and think about where you would put it different times of day. Some people convert one of the available cabinets to a pet cage and then just downsize the other stuff, but a bird that chews can make an impression on a wood-framed cabinet. RV heat tends to be propane, as is the fridge when you are off the grid, so be sure the ventilation is good.

Dar an RV..Ivan would be in heaven...he did 3000 miles to Pa and back...there were motels of course..I'd leave him at the motel some evenings and I guess he was good...no one said a word

Parrots and RV'S can work... I lived in a 40 foot RV with my amazon and it was very doable. I'm on my phone but I will elaborate more when I get to my computer.
