Is Amason Lifelong learning language?

Hi,
My Yellow Nape is 1 year old, and stat to talk some words and sing one simple children's song. as there are not too much old bird in China, wondering is Amason still learning when getting old if people keep teaching? what is more,generally what age will be the fastest learning peroid ?

Hi there

Amy The Blue Front is 27 years old,and she still learns things,new words,etc..Lately,however,it seems she is learning how to be naughty!

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Amazons, where Amazons have more Fun!

Amazons like Humans continue to Learn though their entire life. And, like Humans, language comes quicker and easier at a younger age. So, plan to keep teaching your Amazon new Words, Songs and Sounds.

As part of your training, please include: Contact Calls (Sounds /Words) that both of you will use to communicate. Amazons are Social Parrots, which means that they live in family groups and within those families members communicate with each other all day long. Examples:

Hi, I'm Okay. Are you Okay?
I am here, Where are you?
I am busy over here, What are you doing?
Hey, there are Birds outside, Yes, I see them?
Hey, there are People outside, Oh, I did not see them!

In most all cases, Amazons will use specific sounds for these communications calls. Part of you're needing to learn your Amazon's verbal Language is to hear the sounds and connect them to what is going on around you and them.

Amazons Body Language: Please take the time to Read the two Threads at the top of the Amazon Forum. They are highlighted in Light Blue. I would recommend that you start with the Thread that is Titled: Amazon Body Language. I strongly recommend that you read this Thread to your Amazons 'Aloud.' First Amazon's Love to Be Read Too! and Second, it will help you more quickly make this part of your understanding of the Body Language that your Amazons is using to Communicate with you.

I normally recommend that people who are getting older Amazons, read this Thread several times each day for several weeks. However, your Amazons is younger and is not yet using all of the Body Language items. So for you, please come back to this Thread and read it to your Amazons once per month for the next four years. This will allow you to see the changes your Amazon will be making as it grows from a child to a young adult.

When working with your Amazons, always work from this Position: It is NEVER the Fault of the Amazon! It is ALWAYS the Fault of the Human! When you always work from this Position, when you do something wrong, you will more quickly see it and correct. Example: Your Amazon Bites you! It is not the fault of the Amazon for Biting you! It is your fault for not Seeing what you did wrong or had not seen the Body Language of your Amazons telling you if you keep doing 'whatever added here' he is going to Bite you.

The other Thread; I Love Amazons - ... is a knowledge Thread and will be helpful to read and know. As with the Amazons Body Language, you will want to read it 'Aloud' to your Amazon. It can be Read in section (specific Posts).

Our Amazon learned most of his words the first year or so, then learned very few words after that. But I think maybe it's because his human didn't work to teach him, or reward him for learning words. If your Amazon figures out that saying words earns praise and rewards he might keep learning new words forever.

My Yellow-crowned Amazon George lived to be about 70 years old and learned new words up until the last year of his life.

Wa...70 years old...! I can not image that, you much be very happy with his/her accompany, I hope my bird will be health enough and accompany my famlies for that long.BTW.is the bird getting smarter when they getting older?

I actually have been to Guangzhou, last year, as a part of a business trip. I attended a trade show for companies in my industry. I did not get a chance to see much of Guangzhou ( the double pebble or the Chen Ancestral Hall, etc ).

What are you teaching your Amazon to say, besides Hello ?

Guangzhou! I was there many times from 1998 to 2001. At that time change was coming so quickly - it was a different city every time I saw it. I would take the train from HK, and marvel at the sights out the window. Everything from new high-rise, glass and steel buildings to farmers with water buffalo. I thought, this is a place in transition, it will never look like this again.

I have a book - it's in English - called "teaching your bird to talk" that I think is good. If you have another person to help, you can use the "model - rival" technique for talking, tricks, learning to play with toys, everything. You have the other person stand near the parrot, and say something, like "hello" to them. When they say "hello" back, praise them and feed them a treat that the parrot also likes. Or the two of you can take turns playing with a toy, handing it back and forth. You just do any behavior you want the parrot to learn and when the parrot figures out that the rival is getting a reward for something, he will probably begin to do it. They learn from the flock. Once the parrot learns that certain behaviors earn treats, they will keep learning things for the rest of their lives.

I don't have any proof, but it seems that when parrots have lots of things to do, they become smarter. A parrot that gets lots of attention and cuddles all the time might become very dependent on humans and not learn to entertain themselves. If they learn to chew up toys, get treats out of foraging toys, ring bells, etc. they seem to interact more with the world and pay attention. Our macaw likes to throw paper scraps from the top of his cage and watch them flutter to the floor, then he throws more. It seems to me that he enjoys the sight, and learning that he has some control over his environment, which helps his confidence.

I have a Patagonian, who says/sings about 20 things at any one time, but it varies over the years. Words/songs come and go. He imitates my husband (his arch rival) and/or things on tv/radio about as much as imitates me.

It is a worldly forum, indeed! I remember my first trip to China. First night there, I was taken out to a nice, fancy Chinese restaurant by the company I was visiting. At the door was a Sulphur Cockatoo, sitting well behaved on a stand. When we walked in, the cockatoo said "Ni Hou" ( Hello). I was amazed at how smart this parrot was - after all, he spoke Mandarin! I started to tell my dinner companions this, and they all laughed , saying "Well what else would he speak?"

I was told that Amason is good at singing, I am trying to teaching him some simple chinese songs. and his aleady master one of the song, "Wish you a fortune！Give me a red packet!" "bye bye","I am a little bird,but I can not fly..." and "Little baby" which learned from my mother-in-law who always calls my 9 months baby and some other words I don't understand. however I don't know why he just speak few words outside or in front of me in most of the time. is is could be better after he two/three years old ?

wa. you have been to China 15 years ago, you muich know lot of chinese culture. There is Great changes have taken place in China right now . pls travel to China again when you have change,I think you will enjoy it.

It is fansastic here, especially for me (fresh parrot breeder) I received lot of good advices and can know more parrot pans.

Parrot really smarter than I thought! just a little pity that the parrots in China are hugh expensive... even though it still can not stop some guys love it and willing to pay,but It can not be well known as dogs and cats
