Hi all, I'm new to this and a new owner of a mealy Amazon could anybody tell me what my mealy called Tommy is telling me? He puts his foot in my hand then puts his beak down to my hand is he going to bite me, or is he telling me something else?

My Good Friend has provided you with the Foundation of Living and Loving an Amazon! Meally's Love to be Read Too! So, get comfortable have your Meally along side and start by READING a Loud to your Tommy: Understanding Body Language!

I will fully admit to a very large soft spot for Meally's.

Sadly, I have to partake in a road trip shortly, but will be back later today.

The only thing that can screw-up a relationship with a Meally Amazon is the Human!

More details, please!

Enjoy!

Welcome and be welcomed, to you and Tommy. Lucky is the parront of a Mealy Amazon. And you have gotten advice from THE Amazon person on this forum. If you are new to parrots in addition to being new to Amazons, there is a world of good advice about feeding, caging, health, behaviour problems, just about any question you might have. THe Search button above is your gateway to all this information.

Oh and we like pics here, too, especially from new members with rarer parrots.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Mealy's are one of the most docile amazons out there.

I'd have to see what the bird is doing.

My Kiwi's favorite bird toys are fingers, so it might be the same thing. The desire to play with your fingers. Kiwi, however, is BITE PRESSURE TRAINED... which is harder to do with an amazon, but still quite do-able. (It just takes longer than it does with a macaw. And you have to be careful about not getting them too wound up in "Amazon Overload" mode.

Does this bird allow touching?

It's hard to say without more info. It could be anything from getting ready to offering you a warm meal (regurgitation) to making sure you won't pull your hand away when she tries to "step up"

Where do you live? These seem to be very uncommon in the US. If i look for rescue amazons hundreds come up. If i look for a rescue mealy there is literally one halfway across the country from me. I would love to adopt a mealy.
