Kiwi has inherited my mom's amazon Barney's old cage. This is a very special and precious cage and my parents are thrilled it will be used again. The proud new owner is very excited and will be using it during the summer on the patio:)

Circa 1978, a few years old getting scritches in his cage:

2017, the new guy checks out his new summer digs:

(Kiwi has no qualms about checking new stuff out right away. I practically had to ward him off with a stick to keep him away while I was cleaning it up:eek:)

Time to put some of them new perches lovingly gifted with the cage in there (manzanita grows wild in my mom's yard, so she sent some branches too)

On a side note, if you can afford it, they aren't lying when they say a stainless cage will last a lifetime and beyond. Still polishes back to a mirror like finish. Incredible! The stand is not original, I just thought it would match well and is aluminum so won't rust outside :)

How wonderful! We have a very similar cage that serves as Goofy's travel cage. It's probably about the same age too. MrC recalls purchasing it shortly after his wedding to his late wife...in 1976. They certainly do last forever. I'm sure everybody will get much enjoyment out of it!

It's a shame they don't make these anymore. They really do last and are virtually indestructible! I have been rather disappointed with powder coat cages by comparison. My parents have quite a few of these old stainless dome cages around, the oldest one (early 1960's, originally housing my grandmothers bird!) is a bit bigger and Kiwi lived in for quite a while when we first got him in 2008 (but did have some welds break so we got him a new cage). You have to ask Mr. C if he can verify my mothers claim stainless cages used to be a cheap option compared to other cages? She doesn't believe that a new stainless cage costs about the same it would if it were solid gold.

He says he honestly doesn't recall the details. But yeah, they're virtually indestructible. I wish all of my cages were that well made.

What a wonderful gift for Kiwi! He sure didn't waste any time checking it out.
I can't believe how great the cage looks, they sure don't make them like that anymore.

Our Julio would still be marching around the outside determining if this 'new' gift from his 'staff' measured-up to his standards! And, would never go inside until his 'staff' had properly out-fitted the interior spaces under his direction!

Kiwi, is just so appreciative or is it his approach that if I claim it first, its mine, after all possession is .9 tens of the Law of Ownership!

I remember that prior too and likely during that time period many cages had been built by local craftsmen and that the cages your mother is talking about is the first production series cages. But, I am not standing by that until the fog clears a bit more. :D

I cannot think of a better tribute to honor Barney. Glad the cage is put to terrific use, Kiwi will enjoy!

Kiwi tell Julio he should't question the gifts his human subordinates bring him, as they are always safe and usually fun! He's always been almost totally fearless and extremely curious about new things. He wants to check out EVERYTHING which enters his domain, especially if one of us is messing with it (and I was cleaning this cage right in front of him, so he was VERY eager to get at it).
