Hot (spicey) foods..

...I think this was discussed before..but asking again

I know Ms Gail says the Rickeybird loves his peppers..I had a bowl of some pretty hot chili ( to me anyway) and saw Amy eye ballin' my bowl. So I asked if she wanted a taste and put a spoonful in her nummy bowl ( beans,a tiny bit of burger and sauce) and man o' man she dug in with gusto lol..ate it all up and looked at me for more

So...my questions is..do your fids like hot stuff too??

They sure do. I have some dried Moruga Scorpion peppers (~ 1M SHU) that the girls like to chew on. I tried a tiny bit and it was like lava. I got hiccups and strong burning sensation around my lips. And I even felt it hours later when I burped, even just a little bit.

It has always astounded me the level of 'Hot' (spicy) food my Amazons have loved. It is critically important 'if you are a bill kisser' to assure that you're Parrot has not been enjoying a spicy dish prior to sharing a bill kiss!

Short answer is YES:12:

The seed mix that Bingo gets has dried chili peppers. Sometimes he uses them as scratching tools but sometimes he eats them.
I like spice food's also. when eating a burrito Bingo is not happy unless he gets the bottom bite of the burrito (where all the juices and spices sauce as ended up) .

I don't think birds in general care about capsaicin (the hot stuff in peppers). Our wild bird food gets doped with that stuff to annoy the squirrels but it doesn't deter the birds. You do need to be careful about handling the stuff yourself (lest you touch your eyes.)

Indeed you do! I actually gave my girls a few pieces this evening and "forgot" (read: didn't care enough) to wash my hands afterwards. I made extra sure not to touch my eyes, but I did touch my face and now, over an hour later, I still feel the burning spots on my face and I don't know whether to cough or sneeze first.

Oh, and if you try to handle these peppers after washing up, it's not a good idea either. Capsaicin has the nasty habit of getting through the softened skin and it burns like hell, too.

As some of you know, he Rb covets hot chiles so much that it's the only way I can get his fearless, flighted majesty back into the cage. He loves them more than he loves me.

Salty's current batch of chop ( 63 baggies of it) is mostly pepper based. I even have some Ghost peppers in there, he seems to like it. Some of my chop batches have been used as veggie soup stock by Geri, but this current batch is way way too hot for that. I mixed in some baby food one night, with my dinner fork, and didnt wash it off. Hoo Momma, I won't do that again. ANd Jim you of course know the story of when my YNA, many years ago, loved dried hot red chiles. I fed him some and when to the john , to take a whizz, and didnt wash my hands before. Talk about time travel - each minute felt like a year !!

My only bird who consistently likes peppers is Gonzo the BFA. While I love spicy foods, he is definitely not a "kissable" bird, so there is no danger of cross contamination!
