Wits end..again..

..PLEASE! some one give me advice..reasonable...SERIOUS advice

I do not know what is driving Amy to want to be on BB's roof.
AGAIN,just now,I let them both out,and I just turn my back, and Amy is climbing down from her house, running across the room to climb up BB's shingles to his roof. I am not even out of the room yet.

I have noticed that Beebs doesn't even HAVE to be in his house. He could be with me and Amy will run to his house. She either just sits on his roof and will play with whatever toys are up there,or,at times she will go INSIDE and sit on one of his perches..might play with his toys or eat HIS grub

If he is on his roof and she climbs up,Amy doesn't bother the little boy at all.She may get close to him and "fluff up" but she doesn't attack him at all, never has,and has never attacked Smokey or The Cockatoo Man.

Now BB's house was Smokeys old house, located in the same place where Smokes lived,on the floor,on the other side of the living room.
Like I mentioned, she doesn't attack him,he DOES try to avoid her at times, sometimes flapflapflapping to the couch, but he has never shown any signs of being frightened by him.

I have NO CLUE to why she is obsessed with his digs.

Do I just say "oh well" and let her hang?
She will do this many times in a day/night and within minutes of me putting her back on her playtop.

If she is on her chair,in this room with me,she doesn't wander back to be there,it's only when she is in the living room when she goes to his 'hood.

Re: Wits end..again..

Could Amy be protecting Smokey's house - maybe she has decided that she doesn't want Beebs living in Smokey's house.

Hope someone that has more bird smarts can help you figure it out.

Re: Wits end..again..

Hmmm, lets see here, at one point not that long ago, it was all Amy's house. No sharing, it was all Amy's, front door to back door, side wall to side wall, everything - including you!

Any possibility that the new kid on the block is seen to be pushing Amy to second place? How best to make a clear statement of who is the Big Parrot of the house then to set on top or check-out the insides of the digs!

Lots of possibilities here! Count your blessings my friend. Amy could make tiny bits of Beeb's! So, If Amy is not showing any signs of that possibility, you're very lucking!!!

Re: Wits end..again..

Jim, is the intent here to stop Amy from doing this, or to just understand why? Or both?

Re: Wits end..again..

You need to figure out what the "reward" is for getting on the cage. Is it fun, the grass is always greener, jealousy or does it mean instant attention from dad? Just my opinion from what I read - you know Amy best, but I would try ignoring it a few times, with Beebs in a safe place. Totally ignore her. Then after a bit remove her to an appropriate place and give tons of attention. If it works great if not you know it's not for your attention.

Re: Wits end..again..

Ok now.. Al...I'd like her to stop...but know why Amy does this.

There were ALWAYS two birdies in my family..until Smokey flew off to Rainbow Bridge..then Jonesy came along..then BB. It was only Amy and me for a couple months..she has always had another birdie buddy living with us.

Maybe its an attention thing.."If I climb BB's house,Dad is going to come running"

So I think I'll let her have her way,and IGNORE her,the best I can lol for the time being and see what happens. Just to be on the safe side I'll let her do this as long as BB is safe in his house or with me.

Re: Wits end..again..

Perhaps if you ever see one for a good price, Miss Amy is indicating she would like a small cage of her own to hang out in sometimes? Or even a cardboard box with a "door" cut out in it for her (my moms amazon loves hiding boxes!)? For an amazon sized bird, a cockatiel sized cage may well seem like a cozy little tree hollow

Another consideration, as I know you got Amy a long time ago- was she ever in a smaller cage than she is now? Perhaps Amy is just having some nostalgia regarding a cage she lived in before of a smaller size? I know "recommended" cage sizes used to be much smaller in the past.

Re: Wits end..again..

Hah. Sounds like Peaches. He is obsessed with getting up on top of Barney's cage. Personally, I've decided he does it just because he knows it worries me and thinks that it is funny. I can't help but get a bit paranoid about toe biting, even though barney is probably the least likely bird in the flock to do any damage.

I personally think you are right about it being another method of forcing attention. Doing things that worries us probably gives them just as satisfying a reaction as the things we want them to do and reward them for. Different, but still as satisfying.

Re: Wits end..again..

Jim, if you just want her to stop, would one of those wide seed guards attached to the bottom of BBs cage stop her from climbing up? I'm thinking of perhpas putting it on upside down, so instead of / you get \, harder for her to climb over? Or you could fab one yourself, your a pretty handy guy ( what biker isnt?). That's a mechanical way of stopping her. Psycological way would be harder - my guess is similar to others, she's jealous and knows that being on BBs cage gets your attention.
