He scared himself!

Fidget's been molting and has most of his flight feathers back. Not all, but most. I have been working with him on the harness hoping that I could convince him it wasnt gonna kill him before he started flying.

Nope.

Just got home from work, put him on his stand and about 5 min later, he was gone! Found him in my bedroom on my nightstand, having knocked over the lamp. Poor little guy was really freaked out. I picked him up and snuggled up against my arm and just chattered for quite awhile. It was kinda cute actually, but I know it was scary for him at the time.

I dont want to clip him and I've been reading the threads about AMY learning to fly and am going to try and take those suggestions. My only concern is that I live in an 850 sq ft apt, so theres not a lot of space. Am I nuts to consider letting him keep his wings and learn to fly in the apt? Is the size going to be a huge problem for trying to do that?

Ideas or suggestions appreciated.

I worry about that too,and my home is 1,500 sq ft lol. BUT, there are other parronts here who have stair cases and hallways (like me) and even beginner flying fids have negotiated all of them.
Folks say to walk around your house/apt with your fid,showing them the walls and windows,having them touch these things with their beakys,explaining as you go "this is a wall...this is a window" let them "feel" the surface.

I'm worried too about Amy crashing into things,but when she starts showing interest in flapflapflapping,I will do this also.

Thanks Jim, I have been walking him around trying to show him windows and walls, but he wont touch them, hes too busy trying to climb up my arm to my shoulder. I had to laugh, yesterday, he flew into the bathroom and right into the mirror! I guess I should have shown him that too! We'll get it all figured out hopefully soon.

Shine if your going to flight your BFA, make sure they know what is solid and what is not. Smacking into a mirror in full flight mode is dangerous.

When Kizzy was fledging, I made a "flight room." I padded everything, covered the mirrors and windows. Once she was doing well in the air, I started uncovering mirrors and windows.

I still have the blinds most of the way down because I'm afraid she'll go full throttle into a window. She only hit a window a few times back when she was learning.

I was told a fledgling's bones are more flexible. Older birds are more likely to get hurt because their bones don't give. That's something to take into account. I wasn't ready because I had planned on clipping Kizzy, but because she learned when she was supposed to, she learned very fast.
