Obligatory album of babies progress pictures: https://imgur.com/gallery/doBiP
This is an update on my previous post where I got some great advise from you guys. Momma ended up laying 3 eggs. They all hatched. I did have to help the last egg. It was smaller than the others and had pipped (I am not sure if the terms are the same used for parrot eggs as peafowl eggs) the egg in a few spots but had not started zipping. After no progress for a day I decided to help. It was the same as helping a peafowl egg, just much smaller. The baby had gotten shrink-wrapped so I was glad I helped. The baby was weak and way smaller than the others. Mom was a pro though and baby made it. I checked thier crops daily to be sure they were all being fed and was ready to step in if needed.
I let mom raise them but I took them out regularly for socialization after they grew pinfeathers and opened thier eyes. I ended up having to remove dad which I really, really hated doing but he got overzealous about protecting the nest and would not let her out to eat and drink. After he attacked her and was hanging off her poor tail feathers I took him out. I put him right next to her though so they could see and talk to each other.
All 3 babies are fledged now and have just started to eat on thier own. The first time I picked them up after they fledged they were wild. I think thier fight or flight instinct kicked in. Quite a few bruises from bites later and working with them daily and they are back to being sweet and tame. I let them have time to fly every day to strengthen lung and chest muscles. They were really clumsy at first and I was so scared they would get hurt. They have it figured out now. I have been trying to teach them the basics (learning along with them as I go). They will stay with mom another week or 2.
I was very lucky and everything went perfectly. I had great advise from people in my local bird club and google was a great help also. While I do not regret them having babies I will try to stop it from happening again. I have taken all your advise and researched everything I could find about preventing them from breeding for when I put mom and dad together again. I have learned so much. I have completed my flock and taken in 3 other birds that desperately needed new homes. After learning how many birds there are in need of homes already I would hate to add more to the problem.
Thank you all for your help in my last post.
