Stubborn 'Zon's??...

Who...besides me....has at times..a VERY stubborn Amazon??

When I open Amy's front door for him (see 'Boat's,I'm learning ) I CANNOT get him to come out. I extend his perch stick into his house,he'll chew it,kick it,hang upside down by one foot from his rafters with the other on the perch,or just walk upside-down from his sealing while chewing away at the perch.
So I have to walk away. Eventually he'll come out and sit on top of his front door. As soon as he see's me coming ZOOM right back inside he goes.
I have to wait until he is on top of his play top, then scurry over real quick and close his front door before he manages to climb down, grab his roof top,and swing upside-down and back inside..this can go one for ten minutes ( a GAME to Amy I'm sure )

OR,like tonight,if I DO manage to close his front door before he manages to scamper back in..when I have his perch and ask him to step up while on his play top,Amy manages to lay on his side, kick the perch, chew the perch, roll over on his back..do ANYTHING except step up!

God forbid I have to get him and Beeb's out of the house because of an emergency!

I thought it was just because Chicky is so new to us that she won't cooperate! How many years of this did I commit to?!? ; )

Jim

We've had Goofy for the last 20 of his 33 years. He pretty much runs the house. It's his house, really. He's just kind enough to let us live here. We have another amazon I'm caring for until her human can get back on her feet and a third that a friend found and I'm caring for while we search for her humans. And they're all as stubborn as they get. Cute, but stubborn.

It sounds like Amy is channeling my Bella. She does most of the same things if she does not want to be picked up.

Re: Stubborn 'Zon's??...

Wow Jim, is this all of a sudden behaviour? Amy seemed pretty easy to handle when Salty and I visited. For us, Salty gets to refuse most things if he so wants to, except "Up, Up". He can refuse his chop, or a trick, or even the whole training session, but he knows that when I ask him to step up, I will out stubborn him. I dont care if he slices my hand up to ribbons, he is stepping up. I think it was 'Boats who gave me the tip to surround his feet, and it kinda forces him to stand on my hand. Not that Salty has ever sliced my hand up - ever! Has Amy always been so reluctant to step up to the perch? I can remember you walking across the parking lot with Amy hanging from the perch/stick, but I dont recall any chasing around.

Per Al's question; is this something new?
Generally, once near any Parrot connects with the joy of being outside of the cage, they act like they cannot get out quick enough. With the length of your relationship with Amy, one would believe that same to be true.

Step-up is so important as it is the base for all other interactions. It is as near to a must do that there is! Emergencies always happen at the worst possible moment and you are faced with 'must move the Parrot,' now!

The Step-up tool that Al speaks of is used for non-flighted Parrots to limit choices other than to Step-up.

Are Amazon's Stubborn? No, but they are specific on what they want to do and what they do not and when! Why do your ask? Oh, yaaaa, Amy has clearly said No! Now comes the part of understanding why, or what has changed!

Oh no nothing new...he has been doing this from day one. It is ONLY when first coming out of his house. All the other times he will step right up.

Amy is one smart Amazon! For near thirty years, Amy has required that you preform this dance before you are allowed to pick him up! Wow!

Amy Rules!
