....making my first batch of birdy muffin's

I saw a post on the cockatiel sub forum that a member posted of making muffins..sooooo...I had to do some grocery shopping anywho, and got goodies..
DANG!! Whoever said feeding the kids wasn't expensive need's to have his/her head smacked with a 2x4
All the goodies were either fresh (fruit/veggies) or 100% organic. I even took the time to read the ingredience:rolleyes:

So..here is what I put in these things.

Corn Meal
Pumpkin/Flax seed
Whole Wheat flour
Hemp seed hearts
Chia seed
Brown rice flour
'nana
blue berry's
diced cauli/broc
diced peppers

Ground pellets went in,both Beebs fruity ones and Amy's Roudybush
A VERY small amount of seed (1/4 cup) of Beebs and Amy's. 2 egg's

Add water to moisten, stir thoroughly, and put 'em in muffin papers and bake 300 degree's for 30-40 minutes.

Welllll...I guess I had the rack too high in the oven :( The top's got brown/crusty but when I took them out the paper cups just stuck to the bottom's and 1/4 of the muffin was just torn away.
So I got 22 muffin's,broke one up and split it with Amy and BB.
Amy seemed to enjoy and ate a good part of his (turns his beak up at chop now,eats/shreds his basement carpet, and at his emergency bowl more often, don't know what to do now)

BB didn't even try his piece. I will admit,I tried a piece lol and it was darn good! Kinda bland to me though, with zero sugar.
Seeing how everything is organic, can I assume it's GOOD for them and can be given a couple times aweek?

I have plenty of ingredience left for a few more batches and will have to "adjust" the stove next time.

They couldn’t have been a miserable failure if Amy chowed down - sounds like a great effort to me :)

Also, remember that old 'toothpick' test!

Timers are good for getting the batch to a test point (check early and adjust).

Here's to the next batch!!!

Sounds awesome add a little coconut oil to the mix might help the come off the wrapper. Don’t go to heavy with it thought gg like I did with my birdie bread.

"Boats...the "tooth pick" thing...that was the one item I FORGOT at the store.
I used one of those turkey poker thingies instead..
Next batch will be better I'm sure!

Jim,

As I understand the process, the wood of the toothpick picks-up moisture and a bit of the mix. When the toothpick come out dry /clean, it time to take them out of the oven. A metal device has a smooth surface and will not pick-up anything.

NOTE, detail provided by: Mrs. Boats! :D

Great words of advise, Al.

Hmmmm, with all due respect to Mrs. Boats (and it’s a lot), I’ve often used a fork in place of a toothpick. Maybe it’s because the moisture gets caught between the tines?

I have trouble with the toothpick method. I learned to use an instant-read thermometer to determine doneness of baked goods. Stick the metal probe into the middle of the thing, making sure not to touch the pan, and when it reads 209 degrees or so it’s done. Some people say 210, some say 208, I just say “or so” because anything in that range seems good. It means most of the water has evaporated. Depending on how dry you want the final thing to be, you might want to be slightly higher or lower. Once you get the perfect result, make note of the internal temperature on the recipe.

I usually set a timer for what I expect to be the minimum baking time, and one for the maximum, but I notice that things seem to be done about the time I can smell them baking. Maybe it’s related to the temperature, once things are hot enough to volatilize the aromatics they are nearly done.

Also, when you remove the paper cups, it helps if the muffins are cool. When they are hot, that's when they stick. Trust me, I know. LOL

That sounds yummy! Sometimes they are so fickle.
I bought Harrison's Birdie Bread and made a tray of mini muffins. Levi rejected it. I offered it to him several times over a fews days & he rejected them every time. He also rejects the nutriberries & avicakes. Oh well …. ;)

Yes Tami...Grey's can be like that!

Well...so far it seem's like Amy is enjoying the pieces I've been giving him.
I think the "burnt/crunchy" parts are his fav so far.
Beeb's,like with everything else, has no interest at all  I'm going to have to try and bribe him,he'll prolly nibble at one if he see's me nibble (at least they taste decent to me lol)

Use coconut oil to grease the pan.

Forget the paper; instead cut up strips of wax paper 'called tabs' and place then UNDER the muffins.

Then you can easily pop them out!

Also as an incentive for BB- add honey to the mixture and crumble the muffin into his food mixture and watch the magic happen!
