Mineral craving?

The blue fronted amazon :green: who lives here has taken
to chewing the corners of walls when she gets out and about.
Always a chewer but more of this behavior of late.

She (not proven) does exhibit some possible nesting / mating-ready
behaviors too.

The house is an old wattle and daub plaster interior with some
gypsum built in, and layers and layers of paint on top. Not suitable
bird food at all.

I'm guessing she's craving more minerals and calcium in her diet.
What can I give her? No interest in cuttlebones - except everntually,
she'll notice it, and turn it into powder in a few minutes. (like what
happens with soft wood.) I think shewants something else.

I don't want to encourage a possible solo egg laying scenario, either.

Any ideas? I know some amazons in the wild like clay licks - is anything
like this suitable/makeable?

If I am following this correctly, you are living in an Older Home, Correct?

If that is true, it is more likely the sweet flavor of Lead! Lead in the paint and Lead in 'some' plasters.

Go to the nearest Big Box store and get a bunch of soft, thin 1/8 - 1/2" white pine trim style wood. Start first in the 'Odd Cut Barrel.' Commonly a much lower pricing and if you have pictures of your Parrot, they may give it to you!

Regardless of the reason, you will need to keep your BFA from those areas. Creating plywood (not chip wood) corner pieces that you can set in front or around those areas.

Amazons need to be busy and if they do not have something to crew of your choice, they will find something not of your choice to crew.

Set-up a visit to your Certified Avian Vet and have your Amazon get a full spectrum blood test and test for Heavy Metal Poisoning.

You have caught this early, so 'if' there is an issue, it is treatable.

FYI: Welcome to Parrot Forums!

Great advice given above. I will only add that you should definitely keep your Amazon away from the walls, can be very toxic and should not be allowed. If you don't trust her when she's not in your sight, put her back in her cage for her own safety. Parrots are chewers and if not given things to chew, will find things on their own! For your parrots sake, heed the advice given above. You can also scrape cuttlebone into her food.

I like the old fashioned clothes pins with the round head. No metal and about a dollar for a big bag at the dollar store. I attach them to the cage bars and Sammy goes to town!
