:(..Just got home..without the green dinosaur :eek: Amy is in the hospital.

He had a full check-up. Doc listened to his heart and lungs, examined the vent area and his nose's,checked for muscle tone of his chest. He is wayyyy over weight! The heaviest he has EVER been..a whopping 543 g's  Amy usually weighs in between 480's to low 500..and he has poor muscle mass at his chest, obviously from not flying. He has a very small growth on his nare, not a concern at this moment. Then they drew blood, trimmed the nails and shortened his sleeves.

He started to stress big time,to the point where he was weezing/making noise as he struggled and was breathing. I tried to comfort him talking and stroking his head and face.

The doc worked as fast as she could..these people there are marvelous on how thorough and what they know about birds..I guess that's why the place is called Kensington BIRD and animal hospital.

She put Amy back in his carrier as I talked to him. He was still panting and breathing hard...then he collapsed! legs out and face to the bottom of the carrier. The doc immediately got him out and put him in an oxygen/heat carrier as I waited...and waited..and WAITED:02:
fifteen minutes later I was allowed to see Amy as the doc just sat there, never taking her eyes off Amy.

The Doc said Amy is "middle aged" and parrots can and do developed health issues..heart and liver especially.Amy "may" have a heart issue. The blood test will give "some" idea, but not the full scope of the problem. He is also getting x-rays done today.

The doc suggested I leave Amy with her so she can keep an eye out,and said she'll have some free time this afternoon to do the x-rays and will get some lab results in.

BB is in good health except for his poo problem:eek: Waiting on lab results before the doc gives any medication. The results she was able to get showed Beebers levels to be good...sighhhh.

Say a prayer for my green monster please..

Jim,

This wonderful community of Parrot Lovers becomes a large family of caring friends when one of our own faces what seems like the unknown. Your friends are here for you Good Friend! You are not alone in this! You and Amy (well likely Amy first) and BB are full members in this family and our Prays and Warm Feathered Hugs are here for you Good Friend.

I have walked this road far too many times and if there is going to be a full on Stress Attack, you could not have been at a better place. That all helps Amy to get the best support, faster and sooner.

All of you are in our Prays!

That's incredibly awful to hear Jim! I'm sending positive thoughts Amy's way the poor darling. I was unaware of BB's pooping problem, what is going on there (?) if you don't mind explaining.

Ok folks we're home. Tests show that Amy has 'avian atherosclerosis", plaque,cholesterol,build-up in his blood..much like his DAD has

The wellness check got Amy worked up,and not enough blood with oxygen was getting to his vitals, thats why he collapsed and nearly passed out. The x-rays also show that his lungs are more "pronounced" then what should be. The doc said it could be a virus or the beginning of phenunoma  and will know more when she gets the remainder of the blood work back.

Looks like Amy will be on meds for the rest of her life..It'll be not a blood thinner, like we hoomans would get,but something that will open up the artery(s) to help with more blood flow.

A Pharmacy called "Road Runner" out of Arizona that deals with stuff like this will be calling me tomorrow. Doc said they make flavored meds too. Amy will have to take it daily via syringe  ( I feel bites and non cooperation already :()

As far as the lung issue..like I said...I'll know more when the doc gets the results in.

As far as The Beebs goes...he had the BEST blood work ever! :D He did get more meds for his boon problem tho.

Aw, Jim. I'm so sorry to hear of Amy's health problems. But at least you know now what he's facing and can take the necessary steps to keep him as healthy as possible. Know that all of us are behind you. You've got a whole community here sending positive thoughts and prayers Amy's way!

Did the vet (who sounds amazing, btw) give you a target weight? Or suggestions for his new diet? What is his current diet?

Oh, and congrats to Beebs on his excellent blood work!

Stephen..the doc said with Amy's "body type" a good weight would be 480-510 g's. His diet consists of a handful of pellets,"some" seed, ( which the doc said NO MORE SEED! NONE!!) I only gave Amy seed as an emergency nosh/treat. He really doesn't eat much of it. He also gets some people food..pasta..chicken bits and leg bone, and gets birdie muffins I make with 100% all organic/healthy stuff..you know, different fruits,'nana/apple/grape/orange..and veggies..pepper,kale,radish,carrot,corn,peas,the kitchen sink..sweet taters, then the bonding agents, brown rice flour, corn meal, flax, pumpkin, hemp seed, chia seed, rolled oats..an egg and a tad bit of honey for flavor..like I said,100% good things!

I believe because of these muffins,BB's blood work came out so good, plus he put on just a tad of weight, went from 88g's to 94 which the doc said was perfectly good for his size :D
