What kind of amazon is this?

Does anyone know what kind of amazon this is? The red seems to go too far down for a lilac-crowned amazon. She looks almost like a red-lored amazon, but she doesn't have any orange on the cheeks.

Classing a species of Amazon can be frustrating resulting from the variation in plumage (Feather Coloration) with Adults (at least 15 years or older). Which leads to a question regarding this Amazon: How Old is s/he.

When Classing Amazons the process involves viewing the key indicators between each species, which begins with the Beak and Nail coloration. Here you will note that in the photos you provided, the Beak is a combination of both mid to light bone with dark spots. This indicator requires the Amazon to be an Adult before this tool can be used.

I agree, looks like a red lored! Not all will have the yellow in the cheeks, although I do see just a slight hint of it in that bird.

When you consider the fact that there are different subspecies of red loreds, it makes a little more sense! The Amazona autumnalis autumnalis have the most amount of yellow in their cheeks where-as the Amazona autumnalis salvini has little to no yellow in the cheeks.

She is a rescue without any information on her background, so I'm not sure how old she is. They think she's at least ten, though.

Thank-you MonicaMc for providing supporting documentation regarding Red-Lored Amazons and for classifying, which Red-Lored Amazon: Amazona autumnalis salvin. Note, the very slight yellow line under the eye.

At 10, there will be a few very minor changes in coloration over the next five to six years barely noticed unless you maintain a photo history.

Generalities are always dangerous, but as a group, Red-Lored Amazon should not be allowed on the floor unless they earn your trust first. Much like shoulder time requires earned trust.

Some of the larger parrots (and small guys, too!) like to attack feet when they are on the floor. Not only this, but it can be a dangerous place for birds to be if they were to accidentally get stepped on.

I don't mind if one of my birds is on the floor, but then again, I only have one that *WOULD* be on the floor... and if she's there, I know to watch where I step! She's not clipped either, she's flighted, but she still enjoys spending time on the ground foraging.

Thank you for your response Monica MC. So I think what you are saying applies to all parrots, right? For some reason the way I understood it is that red Lored Amazons in particular should not be allowed on the floor. But your explanation makes sense for all birds period. That makes sense to me now since I see the tie in with trusting them on your shoulder and trusting them around your feet.Thanks again for clarifying

Yes, it goes for all birds. Some birds are naturally aggressive while on the ground and chase feet. Some birds are natural foragers so they forage around for 'goodies'. Others enjoy having fun playing on the floor.

I know that bird! That's Gloria, she's a red lored amazon. We were instantly smitten with her, but when we met her it looked like she was going to be adopted. She has a very strong preference for men and will do flying dive bomb attacks at people she doesn't like.

What kind of amazon is this?
