More of a curious question than a problem. My male Blue Front "Mac" appears to like to take baths whereas my female Double Yellow Head "Marcy" prefers showers, specifically intense rain showers. She literally shrieks with delight and is the happiest I have ever seen her when the rain just soaks her. She sings, spreads her wings and body to catch every drop. Mac just does a quiet little plop in the bath.

Is this a species thing, a gender thing, or just a personal choice?

I do know this - they bathe are their own terms as far as "how" and "when" they want to get cleaned.

Yep, they'll let you know, and some are very persnickety!
I'd say... just explore and indulge them. I know of no rule or tendency as to gender. I have heard that rainforest species like showers whereas arid species (like my guy) prefer shallow baths. Makes evolutionary/genetic sense, maybe?
My boy likes to splash in a big, shallow wok!
Ooooooh, we'd love pictures or vids of your birds doing their bath thangs!

Sunny a female B&G macaw;
Japie (m) & Appie (f), both are congo african grey;
All are rescues- had to leave their previous homes for 'reasons', are still in contact with them :)
LOL, same here: the ladies love the shower, Japie really preferes the bath (large doggy waterbowl - its the largest thing I can get in the cage -> sofar the only place he will bathe) but will accept getting drenched (sitting on my shoulder) as well.'

Might be a gender-thing, not sure. Appie does not want to go near the bowl (but then it is Japies toy, hands eh beak off!) , I havent found anything macawsized sofar ;)
The are all part duck afaik - they love the water.

Amy a Blue Front 'Zon
Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
Amy ( a male) likes showers with me..arms wide open,rudder flaired,fface/head all poofy and yelling all sorts of Amazon stuff. a misting bottle evokes the same response also.

In my house it seems to be a personal preference thing :). I have one sun conure who will stand in the shower getting absolutely soaked or bath in a bowl. I have another sun and a GCC that HATE water spray of any kind, and bath in bowls with tons of enthusiasm. And my cockatiel is a “spritz only” type of girl - hates the shower and shuns bowl bathing.

My BFA definitely likes a shower. He will bathe in his water cup, but I usually give him a shower. He has a shower perch, and loves to be spritzed and showered. He opens his wings and throws his head all around. He also loves to be blow dried. I keep the dryer moving on low and he sings and whistles while he tries to bite the air coming out. Really entertaining.
