...even in the pet trade..holy crap

Amy and I went to the local pet shop for some supplies and look to see if they got any new fid's in today. Looks like they got a large shipment in coz they have all sorts of birdies and pup-pup's in :)

There was a huge selection of various mutations of BB's. Pied's and normal and a couple cinnamons, all youngsters and very chatty and alert, especially when they saw the big green dinosaur with me  $279  I could have gotten TWO Beebers for that price! Suns and Green Cheeks for $400..even baby Budgies (they had a bazillion of them) Two for $40..Crikey,Wally cost my mom $4.95...sure that was...ummm..a while ago...but geez!

I'm a big fan of Doggo's too..especially English Bullies. There were two absolutely gorgeous pups there, for a mind boggling $4k each. What the hey??

Just venting here folks

That's nothing. Finley was $550 and I see Sun's at the same store for $600 and GCC for $450 or $500 depending if they're normal GCC or a more rare mutation. Yeah in the NJ/NY it's bad.

I think pet stores overprice birds, personally. I got Bum from her breeder and she was I think $125. She came to me take and sweet and eating anything I put in front of her, and that price was in line with the other local breeders I contacted. Several months later I was in a pet store that had some parrotlets, pretty young but they didn’t look very tame, normal green-not any fancy mutations-and they wanted $300 for them. I was really shocked.

wow that's insanely overpriced!

Here a Green Cheek for £200 hand-reared is considered expensive and Budgies still cost next to nothing, and 4K for an English bulldog!!!! My mother got a pure blood German Shepherd for £900 whose parents had both won dog shows in previous years

I am constantly amazed that the large macaws etc. cost you about half what we pay for on this side of the pond, but the prices for 'the small stuff'... utterly ridiculous (from my point of vieuw/ experience of course).

a 'tiel is 65 euro in the petshop, 15-45 if you pick them up at the breeders
(talking about the normal coloured ones and the light semi-albino types)
the parrotlets at the market were about 60 Euro I think (but they were sub-adults/ this years youngsters) both greens and blues (blues could be a bit more pricey- they had different shades& no pricetags and I did not ask -> way too tempting!)
a baby african gray averages about 750- 950 Euro (depends if they had all the tests& DNA done already)

Inger is right. You can’t compare pet shop prices vs breeder prices. Pet shops will be overpriced every time.

Well, another large factor is that you, like myself, are located in the northeast US. That's the main issue. Yes, the prices of birds/puppies everywhere have gone through the roof, but it's not anything like the prices in the northeast US. I'm in central PA, and when looking for my Senegal baby the average price in PA or NJ was around $750-$800 for a hand-raised baby...So I drove 9 hours one-way to Raleigh, NC, and bought Kane from the sweetest, most awesome breeders in the world for $400...and they had hand-raised Green Cheeks, 4 of them, that had just weaned as well, for $200 each!

When I told them what the prices in the Northeast were they told me that they get those comments all the time, and that they have to keep their prices competitive because there are so many bird breeders in the southern US, specifically from NC down to Florida (FL has sooooo many parrot breeders)...

Here's a little trick to keep in-mind too...I know of several pet shops in NY, NJ, and a "Broker" in PA who all buy their parrots at RETAIL pricing from breeders in the southern US, mostly FL, and then they can still bring them up here and sell them at the average price and make a killing...So if you're looking to purchase a parrot from a breeder, don't look at breeders in the northeast US, look down south, specifically Florida, because even if you're paying the extra $150 to have them flown up to you, you'll still save hundreds to thousands of dollars...I have a friend who bought a hand-raised, just-weaned Blue and Gold Macaw last year from a private breeder in Florida for $1,250...Up here he would have paid between $2,500-$3,000...so there ya go.

Pump up the PRE-Holiday pricing too, fot parrots that dont sell. BTW giving anyone a pet for a holiday is just about the worst idea ever.

One of the hazards of growing older is the unavoidable tendency to remember what things cost "in the old days." I admit to having that habit anyway. :D The first parrot in my family was George the YCA, who cost $450 in 1969. In 2018 dollars, accounting for all these years of inflation, that would be roughly $3100-- so the YCA I recently saw in a pet store for $2800 is almost a bargain. The tri-color collie I got for my 11th birthday in 1966 cost all of $40, which would be about $320 after 53 years of inflation. That still seems reasonable to me-- I've seen thoroughbred collies advertised recently for $800. In the 9 years since I got Ralph the QP, prices around here have held steady; standard green QPs sell for anywhere from $150 to $280 locally.

My BFA cost me $500 in 1983 from a breeder in NYC. That was unheard of then. I wonder what he would be now?

In some countries, it's illegal to sell birds before holidays (i.e. Germany)
