Runners..

Do to circumstances beyond my control I will be moving from this dump in a few weeks and Amy and BB and I will be staying with my brother until I can get back on my feet again.
The kids will be in the living room with us but David has hardwood floors thru out his house. He doesn't want me to lay newspaper under their houses and we all know how happy our fids can get when they fling their food everywhere,even little Beebs takes great joy in making messes!

So..what do you folk recommend as a runner? Something that can vacuum pretty easily and be hosed down when necessary??

Old bedsheets?
A lot more work than just newspaper, but you can shake them outside (if there is that option) and then can be chucked in the washingmachine.

With hardwood I would recommend something with a plastic underlay -> birdpoop and hardwood ... not good.

You would do great with a thick layer of paper, bus whatever solution you can think off: a designfreak will veto them all I am afraid.

How about those plastic mats that are used in offices ?
Don't know what they are called but you use them so office chairs can role on them if the floor is carpeted.

I have also seen stuff movers use when they are moving furniture in/out. It's meant to keep carpet from getting worn out during heavy traffic.

What about one of those clear plastic chair runners you can get from an office supply shop. That are made for under chairs so they don’t mark the floor surface or to make chairs roll smoothly on carpets. You can get them for hard floors and they don’t have the little spikes things on the back.

I don't use them now that we have laminate floors, but before we pulled the carpet out of the bird room, I had heavy clear plastic sheeting under the fids cages. It would probably work much nicer on a wood floor since it wouldn't bunch up like it did on the carpet. I got it at Walmart in the fabric section, it comes on their big rolls and you can just buy it by the yard for $3 or $4 dollars a yard. It's easy to sweep or wipe off and can be taken outside and hosed off when you need to.

I put a tray shoe holder underneath and put newspaper in the tray works great!

You could also use those big plastic tops to those big storage bins and put papper on that. I think I got my shoe tray at Target best thing I ever did!!

A couple shower curtains are nice and heavy, also, you can pick up a tarp of whatever size and cut it? The thinner tarps are 5 bucks! Walmart, sporting goods section.

Great suggestions folks..Thanks! I'm kicking myself in the butt because years ago when the carpets were new here I had those plastic runners that you laid in the halls/heavy traffic area that had those little spikes on the underside to keep them in place and I threw the blasted things out

The heavy but clear mats found under office chairs (non-spiked) ..or shower curtains. The spiked carpet protectors are SUPER CHEAP and I use them, but on hard wood, they could damage the floor (you can buy a whole roll at Wal-Mart for 5 bucks)...but if you do go that route, let them off-gas outside, as they have a stong smell and almost leave a film on your hands initially. My bird has been fine with them, but I left them in the sun for 48 hours and washed with vinegar and water.

I use a painter's tarp on my hardwood floor, under the Rb's main cage. Very heavy duty and easy to clean. Most are a hideous blue but I found a couple of nice brown ones that blend.

I use clear painters plastic, probably similar to what Gail suggested. The thinner and less expensive thickness should be more than enough protection.

That's it! I have been using office chair mats for years. They are inexpensive, easy to clean, and when they get yucky, just throw it out and get a new one. I also put paper towels down in the HPA. ( High Poop Area ). LOL

I use a plastic office floor protector, it is anti fungal so it helped to protect the floor in my old house.

I looked at the office floor protector and couldn't find one big enough or cheap enough. (Where did you guys find that stuff on a roll? ) I ended up getting a piece of white board, (like are typically found used as a base on tree stands) A 4 x 8 sheet cost $15 at Home Depot and they cut it to size for me. It totally protects the floor, is hard enough that the cage rolls easily on it and it's really easy to clean. I got clear shower curtains to hang on the walls behind the cage because Fidget is a huge pig! It has worked for him. I do put down a couple of papers where he poops off the door, but even without that, it's still easy to clean.

Here's a pic, the wall doesn't look the best, but it's his house and lucky for me he doesn't mind if I live here too![emoji2]

Home Depot has the plastic floor protectors on a roll. They have the one with the nibs for carpet, and the smooth ones for floors. Pretty inexpensive. I have an office chair pad from Staples in a wood tone so you can't even see it on my wood floor. They last about 2 years, and are $39. That is less than $20 a year, and it works really well. After a while the acid in the poop removes the finish so it becomes harder to keep clean. That's when I get a new one. A lot easier than refinishing the floor!

We go for the plastic office chair matts, Jim. 1 for each cage andkeep the cageslow to the ground so thefoodand poops dont splatter far.

Hmm, they don't have it here. I'll have to check in some other towns for it. Thanks for the info.
