...just curious..those of you who are "owned" by one of the "hot three's"...DYH,YN...BF..what do they weigh? In my mind, those three have basically the same body type, I may be wrong with that statement,I'm sure 'Boats our resident Amazon Snob will correct me ;)
They being rather large in stature and sorta "beefy". I also believe the chicks are bigger than the dudes :p Like I said...I may be wrong!

So...if you know the following, please let me know..Age,Sex,Weight and Species would be nice.

Amy is a Blue Front..is a dna'd Male..Just turned 29...and weighs between 507 and 517g's

Well, our Julio, a 21 year old (what a party), DNA male, floats just under 500g. He is a long time flier and very strong.

The hot three, as a group, have a fairly wide natural range from Central /Southern Mexico for the DYH Amazons. Where the BFA are found at the far Northern edge to the far southern central, South America (the largest range of the group). Size also varies widely. As an example, the Northern Blue Fronts tend to be smaller than their South Central brothers and sisters. Where DYH Amazons tend to be near the same size, but also have a sub-species that are much larger. The Yellow-Naped Amazon also have a fairly wide cross-section regarding body-size.

When the three appear in the companion trade in North America, the BFA's are the most common of the three with Yellow-Napes in the center and DYH Amazons having the smallest population. All are falling in population in North America as with Large Parrot population in general. This driven by fewer breeders and lowering demand.

Range: The smallest BFA I am aware is a small 395g. The heaviest Yellow-Nape I am aware of pounds a heavy 680g.

The gals tend to be slightly larger than the guys.

I will have to try to weigh my big boy Bingo.
It's been a while since I have done that and what I remember may be completely wrong.
Do you know where I can get one of those little T stands that I could use on my scale?

My Sam is a BFA and will be 36 on February 12th. I have had him since he was 11 weeks old. I really do not know if he is a boy or a girl, but since he has never laid an egg, I think he may be a boy. He weighs 508 grams right now, down from 548 last year. We have been trying to keep him on a diet because he can get a little piggy!

Ok so I just weighted Bingo my YNA. He comes in at 573 Grams:eek:
From what I have read I think 550 is the top end for his species.

Merlin my less than 1 year old Green cheek amazon comes in just under 300 grams. 296 Grams to be exact.
:green1:

Hope this helps you out.

Check your scale and determine if it has a zeroing function. Most do! With this function most small perches will work as long as it fits on it. Big goal is to keep the perch as low as possible. Check the big box pet stores. They may have a triangle looking perch that has three different perch sizes. It is the most common perch used with scales as you can select the perch size that is best for your Parrot and have the other two perches that provide a solid foundation.

He really is a large bird. One day I need to try to take a photo of him next to a ruler or something that would give a good scale to show just how big he is.

There are different … I guess the proper term would be sub-species of YNA depending on where they originated from. I know the markings vary .

I think size may vary also. I am not saying he's not overweight (maybe he has big bones:D )

Yes my scale has the tare feature I just never saw a small T stand that would work.

My 4 year old YN weighs around 600g and he is strong flyer. My 6 month DYH girl weighs around 400g. My lilac crowned amazon weighs about 300g.

I just plop Sammy right on the scale plate. He will sit there and try to chew the numbers. Then, I disinfect the plate. Never know what is on those huge parrot feet!

Fidget, my 3.5 year old BFA weighs in at 402g.

He sure seems small compared to everyone else here. Maybe I need to feed him more junk food! ;)

Your guy has a few more years of growing. So, a bit early to become concern about his weight. You feed him Junk Food? Our Julio openly steals it! :D

Hey everyone. Yes most Male amazons will gain about 10% in body weight during breeding season. Texsize,, 550 grams is on the slightly heavy size for a parvipes subspecies of YNA. Generally speaking it should be in the 500 gram range. Autopilia subspecies are generally much heavier. I have and had several males who had healthy weights in the 750 to 800 grams range.
Of course there is much cross breeding with domestic parrot breeding not only between species but also subspecies . It's hard to make absolute statements about birds breed in captivity as far as best weight.
Having a knowledgeable amazon person hold your bird in their hands is the best way to gauge healthy weight.

Beginner here what is the importance of weighing your birds? And what is it you all use to do the weighing?

Weight is important for health reasons. It is hard to visually tell if they are loosing or gaining weight. Either way its important to know to determine if the birdie is sick. Just like us humans..too fat isn't good nor is too skinny! I have a scale from Parrot Wizzard. Very accurate with a T stand. Other members devise their own with food scales etc.

Remember folks that for a weight to have any real meaning one needs to repeat it daily at first. Then weekly and for healthy Parrots and IMHO once a month targeting the same date. The best time is in the morning just after their morning movement and prior to food and water. Any other time during the day will result in variations.

When my Sam was having trouble with fatty liver, his weight decreased to 480 gms. Had I not been weighing him regularly, I would not have known that something may be wrong. Once we adjusted his diet and put him on lactulose with milk thistle, everything returned to normal. His liver enzymes are now normal and his weight back to where it always has been. Weighing a parrot can be a great tool to show issues with their health.

Excellent to know! You all mentioned health concerns...which I am learning on as I go. Do parrots typically go to the vet on a routine basis? We all know dogs should go once a year for vaccines but whats normal in the bird world?

It is wise to do at the least,an annual "wellness" check-up and you MUST go to a CERTIFIED AVIAN VET!! (CAV). and not just "any" vet, or "exotic" vet. You need to go to a vet that specializes in BIRDS!
The vet will do a visual check of the bird..weigh him/her..check the vent area..manipulate the wings looking for any abnormalties..do blood work to check on certain things (just like our doc's do with us!) They may trim the birdies nails if too sharp..maybe do a little beak trimming.
It is also a good idea to have them do a DNA check. Knowing if your birdie is a he or she is good for the vet to know.
When Amy came home with me at four months old back in 1990 I "assumed" Amy was a she..well imagine MY surprise when during HIS wellness check in 2015 "she" was 25 years old then) I decided to do the test ( the test just takes a small amount of blood) that Amy is really AMOS!! :52:

At a wellness check last year I found out Amy has heart problems, and he needs to take meds now daily that helps enlargine the arteries to his heart. It was found that an artery has plaque build-up just like we can get. If I didn't take him in for this wellness check,I would have never known he has this problem and he "could have" died at any time.
Now he is on his meds,I can literally see the difference the meds make. He is much more alert, more vocal, playful, loving and a trouble maker ;)
