Stephen Squawking is working hard learning how to bird. Unfortunately he is fearless and had a crash landing yesterday. He didnā€™t quite land right and wrenched his foot. Heā€™s at the vet now. X-ray was clean; no fractures. Heā€™s trying to grip with his foot so no suspicion of connective tissue injury. Vet thinks just a bad twist. Heā€™s splinting it for support and is going to watch him for a few hours, but otherwise he should be just fine. The vet, trying to make me feel better, was cracking jokes about matching bum legs. Stevie was brought to him with his other leg injured and heā€™s missing a tiny part of his toe on that foot (another reason heā€™s a rehab failure). This bird. Heā€™s going to turn the rest of my hair grey.

Sounds like we are both going through the same trials right now.
Your baby is just fledging, my Merlin while young is just getting the hang of flight because the breeder had him clipped.

Landing always seems to be the hard part to learn. Next to that is managing to fly to the place you want to go and not end up somewhere you can't get out of.

Heā€™s got a tiny little cast now. Dr J went with a cast because of his age and wanting to make sure his foot stays well formed and doesnā€™t curl up. Heā€™s mad at the world now, but happily playing with his toys, so other than flying an perching, heā€™s not letting it slow him down too much.

Steven Squawking has tons of spirit!! Glad there was no break, though pinning is a viable surgical procedure. (don't ask how I know this lol!)

How does he get around? Apparently by running. This bird is unstoppable. He's definitely got a huge personality and even bigger spirit.

I was wondering the same thing Ms Bea, but then I realized their nothing children cannot overcome, remembering he's just a mere chick in spirit although his body is bigger, I'm sure he will do things in the cast other birds just dream of doing. Best part is the cast will tune him to balance, and orientate him even better.

He has. We're watching him before we jump to a collar. We'd like to not make his life any more difficult than it has to be. He's chewing on it less this morning though, so that's good.

Dr. Jenkins is pretty darned cute too. :D He and his wife are such a lovely couple.

Yes, Dr. Jenkins is our vet. He's actually pretty amazing. This happened Sunday night and he messaged with me on Instagram (my birds have a page and he follows them), to assess the severity of the injury and provide a treatment plan until he could see him yesterday morning.

My son had a blue and yellow Iguana and a blue and gold Macaw and still has a Scarlet Macaw.
The yellow one died young and the blue Iguana kept prolapsing over and over. Dr Jenkins said he had never seen this happen so many times. Then his blue and gold mccaw got wasting disease and Jenkins kept him but he died.
He said Ryan has had the worst luck ever. He has been great though!

Heā€™s an amazing human and an extraordinary vet. We intentionally take in disabled and medically needy birds so we see him a lot. Heā€™s actually had us come in on a Sunday night when theyā€™re normally closed to care for a sick bird. He goes above and beyond all the time.
