… What is a proper "serving" for a 500g-ish fid?? Amy gets one real serving a day,in the morning (Remember? Brekky is always the most important meal of the day :D) And its a good sized bowl. I start with two to three tablespoons of Bird Street Bistro grub and add whatever fresh veggies/fruit I happen to have. This morning it was two tablespoons of mixed/diced peppers,a couple heads of broc and cauliflour. Fruit was three or four red grapes and a piece of watermelon, other days its two or three slices of 'nana, then topped off with a small piece of raison cinnamon bread with almond butter for his heart med.
His other bowl has Roudybush pellets and I might add a couple whole almonds and a small amount of honeynut cheerios and a nutraberry or two. Today instead of the berries it was a small amount of Bear Naked fruit and nut granola. I remove this around noon and he has his pellets and other added goodies to munch on during the day. Then in the evening he'll get another two tablespoons of Birdy Bistro ( a different flavor of course!)

How much/how often,do you feed your "large" fid?? Just curious.

Yellow Shoulder Amazon, Salty
Jim, Salty is 320 to Amys 500, but here is his diet: Morning, couple table spoons Roudyboush pellets, 1 nutraberry, and 1/2 walnut. Lunch is some kinda fruit or occasionally some veggie he loves ( frozen peas or fresh corn wheel), dinner is what ever chop is the current mix ( be running out soon so a new batch next weekend). Dinner is his big meal. He will dive in, when we eat, and then 'sample' over the next few hours.
Plus he gets maybe 10 pine nuts for training treats. He has a few puzzle toys w/walnuts, but he hits those every few days, not every day.

DYH Amazon
We have either been very lucky or our Amazons over the many years have become comfortable that food will always be available.
At the top of the Amazon Forum is my I Love Amazons - ..., Thread and within it I include what we feed. You will note that there is not a statement regarding specific volumes as we view it as a constantly changing item based on availability (time of year) and the diet needs of our Amazon based on blood tests.
Julio always has dry food available, but the wet foods changes during the day. It keeps him interested as to what 'new' stuff may have appeared.

There are tons of different approaches, the most important is that it is targeted around the heathly needs of your Amazon.

Levi - 6 yr old CAG

DOH-4/2/2016
Hi Jim,

Levi is generally 445gms. He isn't a big eater during the day and gets most of his calories in the evening. I used to worry about that, but his Vet reassured me that it was just his way and he was at a healthy weight.

He always has fresh pellets available. I give him raw, (chop) once a day (midday) & a cooked meal once a day. (dinner time) The chop & cooked meal varies to keep things interesting. I've tried the Bistro and he wasn't crazy about it. But, I'm considering trying it again. He loves scrambles eggs, pasta and fruit but that is limited. I buy him the organic veggie pastas. I give him nuts as treats/rewards and a tbsp or less of a seed mix later in the evening. I usually get an AG seed mix to target his needs.
In addition, I offer him fresh veggies periodically during the day, as I am preparing meals for the humans in the house. I also occasionally will offer him a tiny piece of shrimp or salmon (unseasoned) if that's what I am making. And I always offer him chicken & turkey bones when available.

I'm also looking for new ideas to keep him interested and healthy. :)

I bought this Cookbook a while ago and I really love it. It is especially helpful for the nutritional facts.

Fidget - BFA, Addy - Red Lored
Fidget, (who should be called Mikey, he'll eat anything! ) eats dehydrated chop every morning for breakfast. Sometimes I will also give him some fresh veges if I have time. Then in the afternoon and/or evening, he will get some fresh fruit and/veges. He always has Harrisons available to him. He usually gets bites of whatever Addy gets too. (and whatever I'm eating most of the time!)

Addy, a Red Lored (who weighed in at 472 g 3 days after I got her) I recently adopted came to me only eating apples, pecans, nutriberries and cheetos. I've had her for a couple of mos now. She still eats apples as her staple, but shes started eating snap peas and seems to like those. She gets a fresh chop mix every morning, but she seems to pick through it and eat mostly the apples, pecans and snap peas, but I'm hoping shes also getting at least a bit of the other stuff thats mixed in. I also give her a few pieces of fruit every afternoon. So far she has touched or licked the white nectarine and today, a blueberry! I keep Zupreem available to her all the time and she seems to be eating those occasionally. I've been pretty concerned about her diet and am constantly offering her new and different healthy things but its slow going. She sort of a scaredy bird and literally runs away anytime I offer anything different. It took me a week to be able to put another bowl in her cage! LOL Anyway, her diet sucks, but we're working on it!

Goofy (YNA), Oscar (Goffin 'too). Foster bird Betty (RLA). RIP Cookie, 1991-2016 ('tiel), Leo (Sengal), Charlotte (scarlet macaw). Grand-birds: Liam (budgie), Donovan (lovebird), RIP Angelo (budgie)
My birds eat a diet of “whatever is on sale at Vine Ripe” (an amazing local store with an outstanding and vast selection of produce at prices a fraction of regular stores”. They have pellets (Mazura) available all day. Their fresh food is 90% veggies with a few fruits for treats. I’m not sure if the volume. I operate on the philosophy that I’d rather toss food than not offer enough variety. They also get chop and Birdie bread at night.

Current contents of the fridge:

Spinach, kale, mint, Thai basil, broccoli, acorn squash, zucchini, beets, radish, ginger, rutabaga, green beans, green pepper, blueberries, honeydew, key limes, carrots.

I keep an eye on their weight to make sure it’s consistent.

My Sam the BFA at 508 gms. gets Harrison's lifetime coarse and Zupreem natural with some seed mix in the AM with his two cheerios coated in medication. At lunch he will get a Nutraberry and half a walnut, with chopped carrot, apple and blueberries. Dinner, he gets whatever veggie we have, usually broccoli, carrot, green beans, peas or corn. Perhaps another Nutraberry. Before bed he gets a small piece of walnut and some fruit. He is 36 now, and the vet has finally called him a " geriatric parrot ". LOL

I suppose I could have gone digging in your post history, but I'd rather not; so, what is Sam's medication for? And congrats on a healthy, long-lifed, happy, companion.

He has a bit of fatty liver, so he gets Lactulose with milk thistle every morning. Has been on it for three years, and is doing great.

Cheerio's soaked with meds...now that's a new approach! :D I'm going to have to try that with Amy!

It works like a charm. Especially since he always loved Cheerios. I find that if I allow the medicine to really soak in, like for 5 minutes, Sam won't even notice it. I guess it is also because I feed it to him on a spoon. Nothing like a 36 year old spoon fed parrot! LOL
