Bread safe for birds?

Sometimes in the morning I give my birds a piece of whole grain toast and they really love it. Someone told me that I shouldn't ever give them any bread that was made with yeast in it, which is most "people" bread. I DO make birdie bread (homemade cornbread with crushed pellets, fruits, veggies and juice in it) which they love as well, but I like to give them variety and have never had a problem with any of my birds eating whole grain breads or toast. Any advice on this? Thanks!!

Whole grain toast is ok for birds. Especially if it has some almond butter spread on top.

I think my birdies would revolt if I didn't share bread with them. They prefer whole grain wheat toast with butter, but like regular old white bread and pancakes, too.

Little bits at a time once in awhile should be okay for them. Like everything, moderation is the key.

I'm not really understanding the yeast argument. Baking a loaf of bread kills all of the yeast. Besides...parrots would encounter billions of natural living yeast cells on their food in the wild every day.

Totally fine as long as the pizza doesn't contain any of the non-safe parrot foods.

on pizza - especially mushrooms. Let's face it, what's pizza without mushrooms?

Onions are another common pizza ingredient that should be avoided. I've heard cooked onions are okay, but I try to avoid those as well.

Not sure about that either, Sharon. Baking powder is mostly sodium bicarbonate, which is where the carbon dioxide bubbles come from, when it gets hot. That would all be gone after a good baking as well.

I suppose this could leave some extra "salt" in the food, though once again, I'm not sure the occasional bit of salt is bad for parrots either. I've read many accounts of wild animals finding salt deposits in the wild and nibbling on it for its benefits.

My guess is, everything in moderation. Don't feed them 2 slices of buttered toast every day and they'll probably be fine.

(I have to add as an aside that I have seen fishermen fighting back against pesky sea gulls, who wolf down food as fast as you can throw it to them (or they can steal it)...throwing antacid tablets (sodium bicarb) at them... they foam at the mouth for a few minutes...not too funny, but definitely an eye-catcher. I can only hope it doesn't hurt them.)

Good question I have multi grain wheat bread that has 170 mg of sodium and 2 g of sugar per slice. If it is something I can give my bird in moderation I would. I give Captain Jack regular cheerioes sometimes since that is one of the things the breeder gave him.

Human cereals are not ideal for parrots because of their high IRON content. I'm not saying don't ever feed it to them, just do so sparingly, and not regularly.

Thanks. The breeder made it clear that should be the only cereal he can eat and never feed him flavored cherrios such as honey nuts etc. I do not give him it often. He gets other stuff such as pellets, bountiful harvest blend, fruits, veggies, nut, eggs or beans. He of course could never eat a serving even if he tried. He only gets a little bit anyways. My vet says I should get corn bead mix, mix in fruits and veggies, and bake it for him. Is there a good corn bread mix?

It is OK to feed bread. There are a couple of misconceptions inherent in your post. Yes, there are yeast infections caused by pathogenic yeast (eg. Candida albicans), but they are completely unrelated to the yeast that is used to leaven bread (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). And then the cooking kills any yeast present anyway.
