Mean to sell amazon?

Hi,

I've had my amazon parrot for 20+years. Even though I'm fond of him, I no longer wish to have him as my pet. There are various reasons for this.

I would really wish for someone else to take him. My question is if it would be awful of me to give/sell him to someone, since parrots grow very fond of their owners?

Furthermore, it's super hard to find someone that I would entrust him to. Do you have any tips?

I mean, it is going to impact him, but if you can't provide him the love he needs/attention etc then you need to do something. He is going to be very upset by re-homing, but if you can't spend time with him or refuse to do so on a daily basis, then I guess you ought to re-home (BUT ONLY TO A REPUTABLE SOURCE LIKE A SOLID RESCUE--not some random first-time parront or Craig's List posting). It just sucks because they are so sensitive. It comes down to what will be best for you Amazon. Perhaps it would help if you explained why, after 20 years, you no longer wish to keep him. People may be able to help via shares experiences etc.

I can say that if you can't provide the attention and care your freind needs. It is better to place him in a home where he will be loved. What is your location? You can post here for re-home. Please make sure they are active members and not someone who joined just to get your free bird. We do have lurkers and flippers that Cruz the forum. But we have so many people here that are fantastic. Hopefully you can take him to the new home , get a feel for the people, and ask questions. Also be honest and upfront about any behavioral issues.

If the relationship becomes untenable for irreconcilable reasons, the last and best duty to your friend of 20+ years is to find a great new home.

Thoroughly vet prospective homes, perhaps offer the right of return to you if the new relationship fails. Ask a reasonable sum of $ to find somebody truly motivated and avoid "flippers."

I imagine that is a very hard decision to have to make. In order to ensure the best possible outcome for the bird, you could consider speaking to a specialty store about what the process would be to surrender your bird and what they do to rehome. It could be the best idea to go through a professional such as a store that has worked with parrots for years rather than thinking about selling independently. If you post the bird for sale online, you may get a lot of interest for people just thinking that the bird is pretty or would be fun but are not well-versed in how to take care of the animal. I researched for almost one year before getting my amazon because I wanted to feel ready and I also wanted to double check that I was not buying on impulse and that it was truly the right decision for me.

If there is not a specialty store in your area (I am in New Jersey and there a few quite a few), you could research avian rescues or people that may foster birds while re-homing them.
