Mr. Grinch Update!

Mr. Grinch had his first vet visit (probably in his life). His vet says he is apparently healthy, prognosis: good! She said his feet have healed pretty well on their own, and his overall feather condition is decent, but that his feather dander will likely clear up after he is on his new healthier diet for a while.

We are waiting for the blood work results, and then we will have a more thorough idea of his overall condition. We will also know his sex! We are guessing male, but I have an uncanny knack for being wrong [emoji38]

It’s such a weight lifted to know that he seems to be doing well. We definitely have
a long road ahead of us in terms of socializing/bonding, but at least it seems like we won’t be fighting two battles at once!

I got the cold shoulder on the way to the vet office (as you can see in the photo), but he actually looked less scared coming back to me after the vet!

(Don’t worry - we were stopped at a red light!)

Yay! So far, so good. Hope the blood work is good too. Nothing better than being your bird's "savior" from those mean vet people. I always used to worry about my guys being mad at me for taking them to the vet, but always turns out well, and they run to me for protection lol!

Nothing like being loved for taking them Home!!! Vet visits can be a relationship enhancer... Just remember that it is smart to be out and about more often than just going to the Vet's.

Amazons are naturally on the powdery side and it has little to due with a skin condition. They produce the powder to support the flight feathers as they slide over each other during flight. Reducing the powder load is an issue of bathing (misting shower).

The Amazon Cold Shoulder has a cross section of meanings. But, yes, the most common is their not liking, or mad at you that moment.

. Traveling with an Amazon and their Body Language can become confusing as they are also busy interacting with the World around them.

Grinch to me has a. Very masculine head , but DNA only way to go. I've git to get my Obi DNA sexed soon

I’ve got my fingers crossed on the blood work. Not expecting to find anything too serious, but at least I’ll know and have a good baseline moving forward!

[mention]SailBoat [/mention] I’m pretty sure this was the mad at me cold shoulder [emoji38] I didn’t want to towel him to get him in his carrier, and he’s still anti-handheld-perch, so I had to put a few treats in the carrier on a small table in front of his cage. I had to leave the room and spy from the kitchen while he made his way into the carrier himself. He seemed much less angry with me on the ride home, though!

I’m not sure if the vet felt he was excessively dusty, but that’s good to know and keep in mind, thank you! Got a house full of dusty birds! Our poor air purifier [emoji12]

[mention]Laurasea [/mention] I think he looks masculine too, but as you said, only one way to find out for sure (unless he lays an egg!). And my experience sexing Amazons by appearance is a big fat none [emoji38] I don’t have a preference one way or another, but figured it would be beneficial at some point, and if the vet was doing other blood work at the same time I may as well do it all at once. Of course, the expense was about ten times the cost of the DIY mail in DNA kits, but I don’t think I have a close enough relationship with Grinch to do that kind of interaction! I’m sure it would hurt me more than him, as I can guarantee I would be bit again. Hard. [emoji37]

Hope everything come up roses with Grinch. Just a word on the travel cage. I have one of those, and they are heavy! It would not hurt to put the seat and shoulder harness around the cage; if you brake hard that heavy cage is going to go sailing, with Grinch inside it. When Salty rides in his pac o bird, I always thread the seat/shoulder belt thru the supplied loops in the back of it ( one of the reasons why I love that carrier - they thought of everything!).

[mention]wrench13 [/mention] I usually use those and I totally forgot this time [emoji2358]! Just out of curiosity , so you use it with the channels against the seat back or out front? And you’re right - it is so heavy! I kind of hate lugging it, but the vet techs always comment on how much they like it, so I keep using it. It has been dedicated to Grinch now, as it was a bit big for our sun conure, Loki. We have some of the Caitec polycarbonate carriers as well for our other birds, which are much easier to carry around. Of course, the overprotective mom in me always puts my hand on the cages for any stops and turns, but that doesn’t account for unexpected wrecks [emoji37]

I hope his blood work comes back good, too. He deserves an easy life.

Thanks for the wonderful update, and I have my fingers crossed for great results from those blood tests too. Mr. Grinch could not be in safer hands than he is with you - even if he is giving you a big fat cold shoulder in this pic! Looking forward to the big gender reveal too!

[mention]LaManuka [/mention] I was definitely getting that cold shoulder [emoji1787] I also got bit during clicker training the other day - I have never had a bird bite bleed so much! [emoji37] he definitely got a good bite in! Oh well! Thus is life! Back at it the next day.

Thank you! I’m hoping for the green light on the blood work, too! I want to let him join our other birds in at least space if not in interaction (supervised, of course!).

I got a call from the vet rather late last night, and of course I immediately thought it would be bad - but it wasn’t!

Grinch’s disease testing and DNA results aren’t back yet, but his avian CBC and complete chemistry results are back: everything looks great except he has low calcium and phosphorus levels. His vet thinks this will improve with a better diet, and that she sees it often with seed diets. I will take that as a win!

Now to await the rest. I imagine his disease testing will also go well, but I’m still anxiously awaiting!

We now only have one bird who isn’t sexed, our sun conure, Loki. And I may have the vet do it at his next annual, but haven’t decided yet! Our G2 and mustached parakeet were sexed prior, so Grinch will be the first gender reveal I get to do [emoji38] I’ll definitely post the remainder of his results when I get them (hopefully today!).
