Lilac Crowned

Hi. I have lurked on this forum for a little while, but never registered.

There is a Lilac Crowned Amazon rescue that needs a home. She is roughly a year old and apparently not hand tamed. It was found at a local truck stop. Anyway, it is being fostered by a local animal rescue. I have read a number of dramatic articles and experiences about Amazons and their hormonal periods. Does anyone have any experience with a Lilac while hormonal. I know they can all behave differently. This is one of the things stopping me from adopting this bird along with running out of space (I have two conures and a cockateil).

She shouldnt be hormonal being a year old. I was hoping for another cockatoo but if this is an urgent case and they need to place her like yesterday I would like to know more.

I don't believe there is any urgency. The bird is being cared for now. As far as the hormonal thing, I am looking forward as I don't want to get this bird and then end up rehoming it later. I guess the simple fact that each bird is different makes my question somewhat impossible to answer. I was hoping for a general idea of what to expect from a Lilac. I work from home and have plenty of time to spend with her, but I need to look forward and fully consider this.

oh, alright. I dont know much about the Amazons but for 6 months out of the year you couldn't get near my AG.
I am interested in learning more on this thread, the only Amazon I have been around was a nice bird "he" was 30 years old but had been through dozens of homes, an old friend has had him for 10 years and hes never been ugly.

My red crowned amazon is fairly quiet. They are a similar species to lilac crowned. He does have occasional mood swings, usually when hes tired. Hes a great talker & very sweet. He doesn't bite alot, but he does seem to communicate w/his beak. I can't speak for hormonal changes, since hes not sexually mature yet (he just turned 5). I have heard that they aren't as bad as YCA, etc. Hes a rowdy boy, likes to hang on things & climbs everything. Good luck w/your decision.

Well if your afraid to see horomones then I don't think you should. You have to really be into zons and have to right personality to understand and care with.
Basically very outgoing people are the fit. Lol Like me haha.

Given a year old he's Most likely a nice bird. But after hormonal time kicks in youll be heart broken to see he wants nothing to do with you. BUT THIS PHASE GOS AWAY AND LIGHTEN UP THRU A FEW YEARS. for me I have a yellow crowned. He expericed horomones at age 5. He's 8 and doens show aggression for horomnes anymore. Just rather be left on his gym to sleep or play. Not with me lol.
When your grogy you rather be left alone. Not bugged. Same with zons.
There usally sexually mature at 4 sometime the following year. For ms the worst phase is the first breeding season FOR THEM is the worst. Doesn tone down for a good 4 to 6 months!! Then every year getting better and better now Sammy is only hormonal during spring and spring only probably 5 weeks of him not letting me do anything but pet him.
So here's the worst of it.

Good new now. Lilac are the calmer species of zons so it might not even be worse than a few lunges. After about 10 years of age they don't really act hormonal but less active.
They are the funniest birds ever IMO. Speech Idc. Sammy doesn talk. But his goofiness and companionship make up for it. Also some amazons never react to horomones So you just have to appraise the breed and accept any and all amazons for there nature
And who knows. Your zon may never show any levels of aggression. It's rare but not uncommon.(if that makes sence). Good luck with your decision

Sorry for the late reply, but thanks to all who responded. This baby was rehomed to someone other than me. So that took care of that issue. I did end up getting a CAG from someone going through a divorce. She has been ignored a little lately...so it has been a rough transition for her. Day by day, she is getting bolder and more relaxed. I am so glad how things worked out.

Thanks. I was skeptical at first, but as soon as I met her I knew it was right. She has been a complete joy. I think this is going to be a great adventure. I just can't tell if it is my phone ringing or her now.
