Ok. Here's the deal. My little girl is a canary-winged parakeet, which is in the genus Brotogeris. They are also known as "pocket parrots" because they like to snuggle into your pockets and wherever else they can get!

We took her to the vet for a new bird checkup, and they were all "HEAD PETTING ONLY OR YOU WILL SEXUALLY FRUSTRATE HER". Seriously? What if she nuzzles herself up to me? All the stuff about Brotogeris parrots says that they like to cuddle into their owners' clothes and stuff. The vet assistant said that was bad. How is it bad if it's what that species is known for?

Will somebody please clear this up? What is the line between sexual petting and normal petting and cuddling? Can I really not hug her EVER? I certainly want her to be happy, but I don't want to overdo it, either! Gah! :18_crazy:

it ok to snuggle with her :). just avoid petting her down the back. you shoukd also not allow her in small sark places, this can stimulate nesting behaviors and egg laying. its ok to let he snuggle in your colar or sweatshirt once in a while, but not frequently or during breeding season. I wouldnt put her in your pocket though. it sounds fun, but you could forget and sit on her or roll over. dobt worry, you can still cuddle, just dont over do it. good luck :)

Stroking a bird down its back/rump is like flirting, you're basically telling your bird that you wanna be more then friends.

Scritching around the face, under the wings and chest/belly is fine, as long as you don't over do it around the back/rump area. I wouldn't freak out if you touch her on the back or anything, just don't do it for hours on end, lol.

I wouldn't worry so much about it until your bird matures, anyways.

Thanks for clearing all this up, everyone. I'm sure she'll help me learn what's OK and what is not. I'm glad under the wings is OK cuz it's really fuzzy under there :)
