Screaming African Grey

I have a young congo grey, bit less than 2 years

It screams excessively at times. i live in a bachelors flat, so the bird is completely aware of my presence all of the time. therefore it cannot be "contact calling"

It would sometimes scream while i'm listening to music, which would still be understandable. but other times it screams while everything is relatively quiet.

I tried ignoring the fellow while screaming, since many ppl seem claim that would make him realize it has no effect.. but it didn't work

then i tried covering his cage as soon as he starts screaming, but that doesn't work either.. he just continues screaming

what am i to do?

thanks!

I had this problem with my grey...still do but to a certain extent now. Mine likes to listen to calming music...such as classical, i cant stand it but the parrot seems to love it. :) Can i ask is it hand tame?? And does it still scream if out the cage??

Actually I suspect that's precisely what it is. He knows you are nearby, but he doesn't know where or if you're okay. Once the family is OUT of the house and no where around most birds don't do much contact calling.

You can't play Marco Polo if you're the only one in the pool. [realizing there are many nationalities here I'm not sure if that metaphor will hit home with non-americans.] Birds contact call when they know their flock is near but not in sight; they don't bother if they know there's no one else there.

So perhaps when he contact calls, just talking to him and letting him know you're there? Would that work, AD?

thanks for the replies guys.

yip it is hand reared, my dad is a breeder, and between the both of us we reared the fellow. He's been living alone with me for more than a year now

He even screams while I am sitting at my computer, which is in the same room as he his cage.

his cage is open most of the time, to allow him to climb out and play on top of it. he even screams when outside the cage..

thanx

Suggest you take him to a non familiar environment when he screams. Even a ride in the car may help. Also do some reasearch and read about grey behaviors and how to solve them. Good luck!!

We need to be realistic at times and remember that we need to think of our Bird's needs, this breed is in need of TLC.
