Separating Budgies.

So.. over the last few weeks Daffy has been loosing weight.

I've been monitoring it and apparently Blue has been chasing Daffy from the food dishes, all three of them.

So I have finally come to the sad conclusion that I must separate them.

They aren't really bonded but they are both close enough that I am having misgivings about it.

this might be a temporary situation but..

Unfortunately the only other cage I have that is suitable for one budgie is an older one that is quite a bit smaller than the joint cage I had for the two of them.

Instead of 20x20x24 its about 18x16x16.

But I have no choice.. I suppose I'll simply get another cage eventually... but dang it...

I'd rather daffy be a healthy weight rather than otherwise.

Any other ideas on what I can do about this?

Have you tried having separate feeding times for them? You could take one out of the cage while the other is still in and feed one out and one in. You could also maybe just use the other cage as a feeding cage, and just separate them for 30 minutes or so while they eat, and then put them back together. Just an idea...Good luck!

The only problem with this...

Is that they aren't hand tame. At least not fully... They know step up well enough but thats about it.

I'm thinking I'll work with them individually keep them in seperate cages at least until I have full trust in either case and then put them back together.

They will still be sharing the same sleep cage; thats not an issue as they don't eat in that cage.

Oh...that would make things more difficult. :) Separating them might be the best idea, then. I definitely think it can be temporary, though. Just keep working with them, and they might just grow out of this stage.

Its not like they can't see each other xP.

I've got the cages side by side; and I'll get a bigger one for blue eventually.

Basically next paycheck will likely do the trick. I can always toss out $30 or so for a certain cage I like and have used before.
