I've recently taken over the care for a 13 year old Senegal from my MIL and he is mean! Only me and her are allowed near him, but he will attack if I outstay my welcome in his cage...which is basically feed me and be gone. I'm trying to get him to warm up, I bought him new branches and tons of toys but he's still not warmed up beyond accepting that I'm the one who feeds him. I have 3 young children so I can't spend hours trying to form a bond but I want us both to have a friendly relationship so that he can eventually get some out of cage time.

Would buying him a new larger cage maybe be a way to please him? He's not huge on change (it can take him a bit to accept new types toys he has not had before). I'm just at a loss...I put him in the kitchen so he gets plenty of people around him, I chat with him. I play senegal birds talking and it seems like he's lonely since he gets very excited, but he's not welcoming of other animals so a friend is not the best idea. Any ideas are very welcome :) Thank you. :green2:

I would start with bringing him from room to room with you if the cage isn't too unwieldy so he is part of the action. The other thing I would do is offer treats (through the bars if he bites)

The other things you can try is touch training. I'd also recommend a book by Barbara Heidenreich called, "Good Bird!"

I've been trying the treats, and his current cage has wheels so I'll move him into the living room when I'm in it and back to the kitchen when I go back out :) I will also look into buying that book you mentioned, thank you :)

I hope it helps. It's tough when we want them to love us, but they aren't ready.

My sennie has moments of what I call "pinchy parrot." I think with patience you can make a good friend of your sennie. I think they are more reserved about new things/people than some other birds.

Just thought I would update you on how he is doing. Since we moved him to the living room he seems happier, and a slight less aggressive cage wise. It's going to be a long road of building up our relationship but he seems more trusting so I know it will all work out :) Thank you again for the idea of moving him around with me, it's working great :D

I've been around him for years, and they stayed with us for a few months but I didn't socialize with him too much due to his placement in the house. I've had him myself for a few weeks now and he wasn't getting any better with me, so I found this forum. He seems happier now though, if the kids are laughing he does as well. They still can't go near him, but he seems to be getting more accepting of the whole family. :) Which is good considering he'll be with us for a long time.
