Today, Flick discovered, and promptly taught Sam and Lady, that if you take the food dishes and throw them off the cage, they make a loud noise, veggies go everywhere, and the dog comes running. Five food dishes later, I was very glad the water dish is too heavy for them to throw...

LOL!

I only have one dish tosser, and that was easily solvable by giving her a dish she came with. I *HATE* attaching it to the cage because it's 7 pieces that go together. Once it's on though, it takes a little work to remove the dish! The sides of the ring (for the dish) has indents on them, then the dish itself has two "bumps" on the outside of it. You can't put the dish into the ring (or take it out) without aligning up the bumps and indents. Here's something similar to what I have (except, my dish also has 2 wingnuts!)

King's Cages Stainless Steel Bolt-on Cup 5 oz - STAINLESS STEEL BOWLS by MY SAFE BIRD STORE

I use mostly Smart Crocks though. I have 10 Corner Crocks (wish they were the D Crocks instead! - 3 pieces), I don't remember how many regular Bowls (small, tall bowls, two pieces) and a Bird Bath/In & Out Bowl (3 pieces).

Smart Crock Food Bowls - Discounted

I also have 3 Twist and Lock crocks (water dishes in two cages), plus 3 Lixit Bird Baths (I like to use these for fresh food!)

Lixit Bowls and Water Bottles

Among other various dishes.... lol

Wow thanks! I mostly was just glad to see yet another example of my Pionus learning to be stinkers, since they were so lifeless when I got them :) All of my cages have dish doors that hold the dishes in place, I just hadn't been using them because I was trying to teach the beginnings of foraging. I think for now I will deal with the mess, but once we are able to move to something more complicated than "look in all the food dishes" for foraging, I will have to get some of those! Thanks again :)

That's funny. Similar here, except no dog comes running to clean it up haha.
Actually it's a little plastic treat cup that attaches to a tabletop play stand. Raven my Bronze Winged Pi takes the little cup and pulls it out of the stand and carries it as he walks back and forth across the stand. I think he's threatening to drop it at any moment! That's why I don't put too much in there at once. Usually I catch him and pull it out of his mouth. If I don't, it's only a matter of time before he drops it and tiny pellets go everywhere.

 SHUDDERS!!! Oh that just brought back some horrible memories.

Niko (the B&G) learned how to remove his food dishes from INSIDE his cage, despite there being a little "lip" of cage bar wire being over on top of each dish. He thought it was THE best game ever. Dry food, soft food, AND water went flying numerous times a day. I was at my wits end. I tried all sorts of Niko-proofing, but nothing worked until I found VERY heavy ceramic crocks that fit in the rings SO tight, even I have a hard time getting them out. :54:

......and then he learned how to remove the entire feed doors, crocks, food, and everything included. :30:

Nipped that in the butt, too. Phew!!! :D

I have not tried the smart crocks, but there are quite a few twist and lock type bowls at the shelter and I openly curse them everytime I do feed and water for the shelter birds. They are a pain to get back on one handed (least for me). And they have the little wedge on the bottom of the bowl, so you cannot set it down on a surface. But again, this is my experience in the shelter, if you're not pushing around a cart with bowls for 20 cages at a time, may not be quite the headache I find at the shelter. But I swear I would never ever ever buy them for use at home.

Ivory is a bowl tosser, but only for the type that just hook onto cage bars. And if anyone is silly enough to put a smaller bowl inside her regular food bowl (like with wet foods), she'll pick that up and fling it as far as she can..... Is it just me or are there others who at times like that ask, who the heck wanted birds!!?? :)

Haha, there have been times when I have asked myself that, though it usually has less to do with throwing things, and more to do with people showing up and my house with no warning before I get to clean up the floor around the cage that day. We have paper down now, but for a long time I was just washing the poo up each day. Three birds who don't really live in the cage = a LOT of poo!

I locked the food down today, I figure I will give it a few days and then try it again. Yes, I know that will probably not do any good :p

Jen, I know what you mean about the twist and lock crocks. Love them and hate them! LOL

I've been considering buying something like these serving trays and possibly modifying them if need be...

If you are pushing around a cart with high enough sides, you might just be able to modify it by inserting some small boards into it.

SilverSage, I forgot about the times when Casey, my tiel, enjoyed pushing things off of a cage top! Didn't matter what it was, as long as she could push it over, watch it fall and hit the floor! Food dishes were popular... lol I always found it hilarious and cute, especially the way she'd lean over the edge and tilt her head just so, looking down upon the mess she created! :D

That is EXACTLY what happened, along with eye pinning and yelling. Someone suggested to me on facebook that they were just clumsy and had done it by accident. let me tell you, it may have been an accident the first time, but I doubt it! The sheer birdy joy on their faces! Especially Flick!

LOL! Well, birds certainly love to have fun! :D

Casey has, for several years, been my most curious bird, thus most likely to get into trouble! Charlie is pretty curious as well, but not like Casey. Jayde has now been out of her cage unsupervised at least twice now, and I wish I knew what she was up to that second time! I've found evidence around the room that she didn't remain in one area! LOL Looks like she had a bit of fun exploring the room!
