hello all im new to parrot forum and need a few questions kinda answering if possible ,ok here goes.
i bought a hahns macaw from a guy who said jake is male ,hes talks brill etc so bought him for £300 with cage ,toys etc we have had him for a good 9 months now and all hes kinda said is hello ,awwww when stoke him, plays peek-a-boo,and dances, but dont say many words at all. so kinda naft of realy the fact he dont talk but love him to bits ,any ways the other day it was weired he was rubbing his opening on his food dish and making a weired noise ,kinda like excitement noice was kinda funny but disturbing as never seen this before what could this be ,also can females do this or not as with him not saying much im thinking hes female ,also with him being 4 yrs old is there any chance of new words being tought to him :green2: thanks in advance

oh yes you can teach new words or he/she will pick them up. You got a bargin on the price. Welcome to our group, Lots of good parrot people here. DNA testing in about $25. and the best way to know the sex of your bird. It sounds like Jake is harmonal with the rubbing. Not to worry it is a natural behavior and can be frustrating to the birds not to have a bird mate. Just ignore this and it will go away until next Springtime.

If you only wanted the bird for its talking you could have spent a lot less money! Your bird is masturbating when he rubs his vent on things. A female would raise her tail and move it to the side.

With such an intelligent bird you should aim for cognitive speech rather than mimicing. Tell him what you're doing, ask him if he's hungry or wants to come out at the appropriate times. Also, can he fly? If so with four kids you should maybe have a quiet perch somewhere that no one is allowed to approach so when the bird is sick of being played with he can go there to get a break. Being able to fly will give him more confidence and might lead to him talking more, too.

hi he can fly yes was gonna get his wings clipped but vet said no as they are ment to fly wich is fine ,he doesnt do much flying as soon as he comes out he flys straight to us and sits on our sholders ,and nibbles our necks, we try to encurige him to fly but he dont have none of it, when he goes bk in his cage we cover him up but only realy let him out once kids have gone to bed as with them playing out the front door is opend alot and keep opening the livingroom door ,im going to get him dna tested and find out what he is so can get him a friend , as heard and read that they like a mate .can i also ask what does congnitive means lol
