Ok my little Bourke's parakeet, Lark, almost seems to have a fear of hands. I'm not sure if this is just because he's new, only been here like four days, or if he's just unsure of being pet. I can pet him if I come behind him but otherwise he postures and nips or flies away. Now his nipping doesn't hurt but the flying/gracefully falling really scares me. I'm afraid he'll hurt himself. He's doing better with a lot of stuff, will step up without any problem now and almost seems to pull my fingers toward him so he can step up quicker. He sits with me outside the cage for like 30 minutes at a time. He also lets me kiss his beak and chest without any problem and often kisses me back ^^ I am so pleased how well he's doing. But he is however .3 ounces underweight, don't think he was eating well in the petstore.

Anyways, is there anyway I can help him along with the hand thing? Or is it a more I should wait and see thing?

Lark has only been with you a short time and unless a bird was hand raised and received a lot of handling, most birds take some time to adjust to hands always being stuck under their beaks and hands being stuck in their cages.....birds see their cages, much as we do our bedrooms...our sanctuary, someplace to hang out that is ours & private.....

It does sound like you've been doing the right things though you might just want to wait a little longer & give him time to get used to you & all his new surroundings...unlike puppies or kittens who can usually be spoiled with some food & a few scratches behind the ears, companion birds like to evaluate things more, before they commit to accepting their new flock members.....just keep being patient, talking gently & let him come to you...if he's really interested & wants your attention, he'll come ask for it.....

Don't worry too much about his weight, when birds move to a new home they often lose a little weight, but will pick it back up with a good diet...also, any posted weights you may have read are only guidelines, like the guidelines that we have, based on our height, age and general general activity level, so if his weight is a little different either way, I wouldn't get too worried about it...after you've had him for a period of time, you'll know what his average weight should be, then if it fluctuates abnormally, you might need to talk to you veterinarian, but remember to take all your weight readings at the same time, mornings before breakfast is a good time.....

So Cymmie, it sounds like you're just anxious, but doing the right things.....good luck.....

Thank you Weco, that eases my fears ^^ I knew it was probably just me overworrying >.< but I tend to like to do that without even meaning to. I will treat more for the good things he does and slow down with the petting. He likes coming out and being held so I'm not worried about that. But slowing down with him makes sense. Even though he was handraised he didn't get a lot of attention from other people besides the person who handraised him. He seems small for a bourke's so I think he is the right weight for his general size right now. He might bulk up more later, he might not, but this is my first time weighing him and I guess I just got worried XD Thanks Weco <3 I will keep everyone updated as he progresses.
