Pazu - Green Cheek Conure - Hatch Date ~27 September 2014~
Hi guys, This is something I'm not sure how to deal with.
My GCC get over excited sometimes, like today i got him some cat ball toys (those plastic balls with a bell inside) for when he's outside his cage. He went ballistic for them and it was amazing to watch him chasing them and throwing them around, all fluffed up and hyper; then he'd stop, energy gone like " I don't wanna play this now" until he got his energy back.
This is adorable and he's having fun, I can hold one in my hand and he'll carefully beck at it until he goes balls to the walls for it and no one can stop him... unless a hand gets too close.
He's done this with a few toys, but when he's into it (before is fine, i can hand him the toy) he'll charge the hand that's nearby. Although I've learnt to move fast or keep out the way either he always stays this way with the toy or he eventually learns to chill, he was like this (maybe calmer) with tea spoons which is an issue for me who can't drink a hot drink without one (obsessive stirring on my front?). He did eventually chill with the tea spoons but is there something I can do beside not let him play with things he gets over excited for? it seems a shame.
Typically I let him get to it and he'll get tired and stop, then it's safe and he wont charge hands but it seems a tad bit risky?
Any advice?

It's just excitement, my GCC does the same thing, so I've learned to play ball (and other toys) with him carefully...you've got to be quick lol! And if we're playing with toys, if he gets me, it's basically my fault for being too slow or distracted. Don't take it personally, parrots take toy playing very seriously, and if a hand takes a hit in the process, then it's part of the game. It's the one thing I haven't been able to curb or control for many years so I just accept it. My conure yanks out spoons as well :)

My green cheek does this too. But i just need to be careful. I will say, i would wayyy rather be bit by my greenie than my sennie! Senegals don't play. When they say no they mean NO! eek! I have three still visible bites on my hand from a few months ago. :( And i am not counting the new ones! It is getting a bit better, i have done clicker traing witch is magic btw! So my advise, just be careful. But it is still annoying. :\ Sorry this is happening to you with your fid. It also may be since its mating season as well...

None at the moment -- I volunteer at a bird rescue, where I've made various avian friends
Any bird can do this when excited. The best advice is (really) to make sure he doesn't get excited. Or if, when he does, to make sure not to reward him with treats; give him treats when he's calm & not showing any aggressive behavior.

Same for mine!
Remember, they are like a 2 year old child! Male!
What does a typical 2 year old boy do when in full mode? He will bite you and go running around the house waving his underwear over his head!

As we mature, we stop biting- as often!

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Okay. I guess my first thought is "and you're surprised, because... ?!"

Your title is simply a statement of fact... with pretty much any bird.

Change "biting" to "maiming" if the bird you just got overly excited is an amazon. (How do amazons play with their toys?! They attack them...)

With a too it's more like "THAT'S MINE! DON'T TOUCH!" :D

The answer is it's normal. Either don't get him that worked up, or wait a few seconds to calm down before handling him, when he's worked up into a state.

And of course, bite pressure train so he doesn't draw blood, only pinches. (Which still hurts, but... )

Ha ha ha ha.....it's typical behavior....Sorry had to laugh, all my birds do that from time to time. You should see a Grey when then get over excited....Keep fingers (if playing with ) at safe distance or he will bite that incredibly hard chasing after ball.....it's all in fun and excitement....bird 101 behavior. :D

That's true.....my Senegal was a terrorist, Must of been a piranha in a previous life as it didn't just bite, it took flesh !!! But now she's mellowed out and matured some, I rarely get bitten.

My Grey on the other hand is a full blown Yaaaheeeew.....Still waving it's underwear with it's beak. His bites can hurt....but he's learning and is in his terrible two's as he will turn two in a couple weeks. Crazy bird he is.!!!

I wonder if they sell body armor to protect you from a crazy grey....
