They really just know what to say, don't they?

I had a bit of a rough day today, to say the least... I did my best to stay calm with everything that happened, but at one point I couldn't take it. When I got home, I let the birds and my rabbit out and then plunked down on the couch with a big fuzzy blanket.

Per usual, as soon as Shiko was out he wanted me to be with me. Normally he lands, looks at me, mumbles jibberish and then buggers off. But for some reason, he just seemed to understand perfectly that I was upset. When he landed on me, he walked towards me doing his "I'm going to love on you" display, got close as he could to my face to press his beak against my nose, then looked me in the eyes and said:

"I love you. Are you okay?"

I started crying it was so sweet! For the next 5 minutes he just let me love on him and cuddle him against my face. It amazes me how he just knew what to do and say right then and there. He seems to understand human emotion so well. He's never done that before either, so I didn't know what to expect. Normally when he pressed his beak against my nose it's to try and preen it or get at my lips.

Parrots are totally a person's best companion... they can actually tell you they love you back!

Chantal, that is such a sweet story and I love the photo of Shiko, he looks so concerned. Thanks for sharing.

We talk about reading our parrot's body language but I think they may be better at it than we are. It's really special when a parrot says, I Love You and asks if you are okay.

That's so sweet Chantal. I would just about have melted! Robin says I love you, but he only does it when he wants attention. My birds are more likely to look at me sideways or bite when I'm upset, not be loving. I would love that though.

Thanks everyone! It is always nice to come back to a companion that can understand, or at least try to.

Avery is totally like that too, Julie. Every time I've gone to her when I'm upset, I normally get a nice chomp and she shuffles further from me. Part of me wonders if she just doesn't like the negative emotions I have and prefers to only associate with me when I'm happy. Shiko always just seems to want to be with me, and I think because he's pretty in tune with me he probably has more empathy for me when I'm upset. Kind of reminds me of some people... some are really good at dealing with others when they're down, some are really at a loss and feel too uncomfortable to be of much use.

Chantal, here I thought my birds were the only ones in the entire world like that lol ;). Sounds like Avery can relate to my guys!

I can see that Raven and especially Griffin are like that with me, but Robin, he's the one that's deeply bonded with me, but still, nope. He must not be able to deal with negative emotions whatsoever either!

Every time our CAG Reno hears us say the name of our lost & probably deceased dog Echo, he says "All gone. Bye bye, now. So long." He really understands - it's heartbreaking.

It's incredible how sentient they are. Their ability to make associations is just mind blowing. And thanks, Victoria! He got it in fully starting November. Instead of it being slow and steady it just kind of happened, haha!
