Yoshi - Green Quaker
I had so many funny ideas for the title but I didn't want to get in trouble so just use your imagination!

My 2 (and a half) year old Quaker, Yoshi, has a toy that he likes to uh...possibly try to have sex with. He (we don't really know if he's a he) starts making this weird panting noise and will put his leg up on the toy and do some "love motions" on it.

My question is if I should do anything about it or just ignore it? If it's going to cause him frustration or problems, I'll remove the toy. If it's not a big deal then I'll just leave it in there and continue to laugh at him and his love doll behind his back.

I'd remove the toy personally. If he's still displaying sexual behavior (and he likely will), ignore it. It's really something you can't discourage because it's instinctual behavior, but it's also something you definitely don't want to encourage either by making a fuss about it. I'm guessing he is hitting puberty. Most parrot species will have raging hormones for a couple years (not sure how long in quakers), but then it calms down into a few weeks of the year thing that isn't a big deal at all. That is of course if you ignore the sexual behavior and don't encourage it while they are going through puberty. If you don't make a big deal of it, they won't.

Kiwi is a mature bird now, but when he was in that "phase", we'd just turn around when he'd start doing his humping dance and not so much as look at him until he stopped. And he did that A LOT when we first adopted him:eek: Now he only has hormonal behavior a few weeks a year during breeding season and it's not even that bad:)

We can say it. We're adults here...

It's called MASTERBATION.

Your bird is using a toy to masterbate. Not exactly an uncommon occurrence...

Take the toy away? Guess what... he'll still masterbate because... well... the toy isn't the thing giving him the urge. He has the urge, they actually don't make little birdie vibrators. (And if they did, that would give a whole new meaning to the term "bird toy." I think we'd know what our bird's favorite toy would be... "He never plays with his little bell anymore...")

Personally, I just ignore it. It isn't the rope toy causing him to stimulate himself. He'll find something else if you take it away from him. It isn't the toy causing his arousal. He's just using it as a tool to "get the job done."

Put it another way, he'll be more relaxed and easier to handle if you just let him get it out of his system...

Ok. I was leaning more towards leaving it alone because it's not causing us any problems and whatever floats his boat! You're right about him finding something else because he's done something similar to his cholla perch...haha.

Does this mean he's for sure a male? You know, since a female would at least have the decency to wait until I turn out the lights?
Only kidding, of course!

Oh this made me laugh - HARD!

IMO you can remove the 'pleasure stick' (sorry...couldn't help myself), but Yoshi will probably find a new object he can help himself with soon thereafter. :54:

I can't tell you how often I've rearranged my female YN's cage in an attempt to dissuade her from masturbating. She WILL find a way. Sure I may make is a little less easy for her, but where there's a will there's a way. :21:

Yeah, as long as he's not trying to get it on with me and it's not causing any problems then I guess I'm not worried about it. My kids think it's hilarious that Yoshi sometimes "dances" with his toy.

Personally, I'm 100% for leaving it alone. First of all, no real harm done. A bird's gotta do what a bird's gotta do. My gcc was a severe plucker when I got him a few years ago...especially seasonally, due to hormones. When he discovered the fun of getting himself off on various toys, the little pervert curtailed his plucking to almost zero. He still gets a little frazzled during breeding season, but no bald spots, and when I got him he was almost totally bald except for his head. Now he's good. Birds are highly sexual creatures, and a lone bird blowing off some steam and expending that excess energy is a good thing. I also had a budgie who masurbated multiple times a day for over 10 years. He was the healthiest, strongest, most robust bird I've ever had. My gcc does it seasonally. ..late winter early spring, then it stops. I'll wager your bird will relax about it when the season is over as well. :) just look the other way lol!

Here's my question, why is there so much advice to discourage masturbation?

I mean, we all do it, so what's the matter with our pets doing it? My dogs hump each other constantly. Is there some element I'm missing here?

Part of it I think is aggression . I know I took a nasty pinch today from BB when he tried to sit on my hand and I moved it away. He can do what he wants with his toys but my hand is off limits.

I say nasty pinch. He grabbed the skin and hung on . We had a little stand off until he let go LOL

Yeah.

If they get "mate aggression" issues with a person. They can get "attacky"

But that really doesn't apply to pleasuring themselves with a toy. It applies to overbonding and "bird mate" issues with a "species confused" parrot.

A bird that is constantly sexually straining can prolapse. Not sure if this applies to masturbating with toys, but moreso when the bird is being sexually stimulated by a person.

The key there is "constant sexual straining." Not the occasional pleasuring of ones self. Maybe I'm nuts, but I think of that more as a chronic egg laying thing.

Some is normal. If the bird turns into one of those birds who does nothing but masterbate with toys all day long, then it might be a problem. But they all do this from time to time. Even birds who have mates occasionally "release their own tension."

My "worst ever" inappropriate bird story: DEMITRE (who else)

Yes, the little "special shower perch" bird...

My EVIL dusky conure...

First... he fed me. (sort of) Did the happy head bob on my shoulder, and then stuffed the contents of his beak into my ear hole...

Ever had wet bird puke in your ear?!

Ever tried to get a glob of wet bird puke OUT OF your ear?!

OH, BUT WAIT... IT GETS BETTER...

Because this was a "date rape" situation. Having "bought me dinner" he then proceeded to latch on to my ear with both feet AND his beak, and then he stuffed SOMETHING ELSE into my ear hole, and began pumping like mad. (And biting my fingers when I tried to pry his little butt off my ear.)

YEAH, now THAT was inappropriate! In fact IT WAS THE MOST INAPPR0PRIATE THING ANY PARROT HAS EVER DONE TO ME...

And all this took place right in front of his mate... the dirty cheater!

And I thought conures were supposed to be pair bond birds!

Yep! True story...

Kinda makes you want to make sure he has a little rope toy to play with, doesn't it?! "That's okay. I'll come back when you're finished. I don't need to pick you up right now!" :D

Holy crap that is the funniest story I've ever read about a parrot!

Puke in the ear, it's like the worst wet willy of your life. I guess I'm just glad they don't have penises or this could get really interesting.

Thanks for clarifying about their behavior when trying to use us. This sounds like the perfect excuse for buying that Hide & Sleep Bird Condo; that is, if they care to go inside that to get the job done.

I've been incredibly lucky in that I've only had one hormonal bird so far. I'm sure I'm in for it since apparently I'm long overdue for dealing with this issue. I just hope no one pukes in my ear. It's probably because I've never had a baby bird (my FIRST baby bird comes home Thursday!) and my birds have always been rescued or rehomes who've already gone through the horny puberty stage.

Yeah. The wet willy that doesn't go away, and takes about ten cue tips and a shower to get rid of.

Well, the "special shower perch" story with that bird was kinda funny too...

I didn't think this one was so funny at the time it was happening... He actually bit the crap outta my fingers when I was prying him off my ear. He was pretty determined to finish...

I didn't let him, of course.

We were the fifth home for that bird. He could be quite evil!

Because the only thing worse than bird puke in the ear is bird puke AND semen.

It's official! Sex toy stays in the cage and Birdman's ear rape story has convinced me to buy several replacement toys just in case.

:D Let's just say that Demitre was NOT a normal bird, and leave it at that...

"Inappropriate" was his middle name.

The Rickeybird, 38-year-old Patagonian Conure
Okay, we're all bird people here, right? I guess I'll chime in with my ribald Rickeybird story. I am the object of his desires... although I can't imagine a less attractive hen... no feathers, big as a hat-tree, and the drabbest pink color imagination. But I digress. He reached sexual maturity at about 3 (some 29 years ago) and over time, we've evolved a little understanding (kinda like my ol'man). Around June of every year, the Rickeybird starts hurling up little chunks for me (fortunately, he keeps them to himself). He gets even louder and more demanding than usual, and he looks for opportunities to scramble up my arm, behind and underneath my hair, and there at the nape of my neck, I can feel him muttering sweet nothings as he rubs his belly on my hairline for about 5-10 seconds and he's done. Oh Heck YES I shower afterwards! And we'll have NO SPECULATION about similarities to my human lovelife. Anyway, he'll try to get away with this several times a week through August, roughly, and then I lose my charm until next year. I feel like I need a shower NOW, in fact, after confessing my extramarital affair.
