Please...I am looking through the threads to see if any old posts came up about parrots who are less noisier than lets say African Greys etc - if anyone has come across a thread already covering this topic I would be so grateful for the link.

I know birds communicate through sound and any bird can become a screecher if left alone and not stimulated or for whatever reason. I am not looking for mute I am just curious as to whether owners have found some breeds are quieter naturally than others.

I have never researched this before because it didn't matter how loud my previous parrot was - no neighbours to complain. I need to bear that in mind now.

Anyone got any advice please?:)

Well as you know each bird will be different, but there are species (parrots come in species not breeds, though some would argue that hybrids such as sunday conures or camelot macaws are breeds) that are known for being quieter.

Are you looking for more of a snuggle buddy? clown? talking ability? What are your other priorities?

My Eclectus talks, but only screams when he is sick (Seriously, one scream and he goes straight to the vet!) and many Eckies that I have met have been similar. However, a screaming Eckie is a force to be reckoned with. He is a great talker and his voice is sweet. When he chatters he chatters in English which is cute. One consideration is that Eckies need a mostly fresh food diet and do not do well with seed based OR pellet based diets. And the poop reflects that!

My Pionus is very very quiet, but came to me a screamer and still has periods where she reverts. When she screams it could peel the paint off the walls, its like the loudest fingernails on a chalkboard that you have ever heard. But Pionus are generally considered good apartment birds especially if you are looking for a smaller bird that really has a "parrot" look. My female does talk, she says a couple of phrases but her voice is raspy and difficult to understand. Maxamilians Pionus are supposedly the best talkers in the Pionus family.

Green Cheeked Conures and others in the same family like crimson bellied conures and maroon bellied conures, and considered to be the quietest of the conures, and I find them to be more addictive than potato chips. I think I can safely say that green cheeks are my favorite species of parrot. They need a lot of cuddles, endless toys to destroy, and firm boundaries. None of mine talk but I have had some fosters that did, it was difficult to understand. Conures have a rep for being "nippy." I hate that because I think people use it as an excuse for their bird to misbehave. I have had several gccs come tome as biters but with some effort that can be worked out. None of mine are biters anymore, and no one would call any of them "nippy."

Cockatiels are so sweet! Adorable personalities, great whistlers and often god talkers, smart, come in tons of colors, tend to accept new flock members easily, rarely bite out of hormones or territorial issues or anything like that, really only when they are very very frightened or a human has taught them to bite. I consider cockatiels to be pretty much the perfect pet :)

Indian Ringnecks, my loudest bird is a ringneck, but so is my quietest. These guys seem to have such a wide range!Males are often good talkers, they are all super smart. They tend not to do as well as other birds when their wings are clipped. They also tend not to be as snugly as many species but they are curious and smart and social and STUNNING and come in lots of colors.

Budgies and Love Birds I do NOT suggest for apartment living if noise is a real concern.

But that said, I and my whole flock live in 600 sq ft in Hawaii, and all the windows have to be open constantly and our neighbors are literally on top of us as we live in a condo. None of my neighbors have ever mentioned any noise. A lot of the noise factor is really a training and environment issue. Yes, some species are louder than others, but a bored lonely cockatiel may drive your neighbors up the wall but a well entertained and content Macaw may never bother them at all.

Silversage - you are a star with this info!!!

I am liking the idea of the Pionus parrot. I asked about the quaker and senegal in my other thread - will wait on anyone's opinion who owns them.

Lol - sorry - species not breed - rusty I tell you!!! I was reading my old posts under my other name and have forgotten so much - yikes!!!

How big do the pionus get aboutish? Will go and take a picture of my balcony so you can have an idea of the size of bird that will be suitable. I am not keen on getting more than one parrot so the balcony would be for one.

I am watching to see how far the sun is going to move - it is protected from the rain which is great.

Width - about 100cm and length - depending on how far the sun comes in about 100cm as well. Height - lots of room to create fun and games going up.

Pionus are smaller than greys or amazons, bigger than most conures... bigger than a red belly parrot, smaller than...hmm... I should weigh mel lol. I have a record of her wieghts but I forget. They are considered a small bird technically.

Lol - liking the sense of humour!!

Ok, I looked at the MP (Maximi...(LOL) Pionus) and the white capped - white cap is really pretty!! Not that the Max isn't :)

You may have just converted me to going for a Pionus. The choice isn't a difficult one - I just want a parrot that isn't as noisy as an African Grey or as large.

Sun doesn't go any further - beginning to pull back so that's a relief!

What is your little one's diet like? Are they picky eaters? Anything I should be aware of that pertains to their species as far as diet is concerned?

Pionus parrots are wonderful! I am definitely on Team Pi :)

I have a female white cap and she is very quiet. She has lived in 2 different apartments and aside from management, no one in the apartment complexes knew I had birds.

My pionus is a picky eater. She doesn't like fruit but does enjoy some vegetables, especially leafy ones. They can tend to have higher cholesterol and prone to fatty liver disease so good to have them on healthy foods. I give her milkthistle seeds daily which help protect and repair the liver.

My white cap ranges between 172-177 grams. She enjoys flying and playing rough with toys. She is really well behaved for me, and I am not the best trainer.

Pionus was and is my dream parrot. I can't believe more people don't have them.

Its so good to be back I tell - thanks for the advice!!!! Yay!

I am busy finding out about breeders and it will be a couple of weeks/months before I am ready to bring my baby home - lots to put in place first. I am just hoping that they have Pionus parrots in Thailand.

My Grey Headed Cape is very quiet. She loves to greet the morning and sunset but in between times she's wonderfully peaceful unless I encourage her to ramp it up!

Wait! Pi's aren't small :) they're medium. I've had larger birds, an Eclectus, and a Slender Billed Too which is around 550+ grams. Still I see Pi's as definitely medium when I compare to my 125 gram Poicephalus.

It really depends on the species of Pionus as to the size. Raven is a mid sized Pionus (Bronze Winged) at about 250 grams. As far as being smaller than Amazons, I had a little Cuban Amazon that was only 220 grams ;).

White Capped Pi and Dusky Pi are the smallest ones, 200 grams or so and as Piasa said, some can go smaller depending on the individual. I've heard of someone with a large Maximilian subspecies and someone with a Blue Headed that were not overweight and a little over 300 grams.

I've had 2 Pionus and IME, they are not loud for their size. Raven usually talks, and only screams when he's yelling at Griffin. The sound reminds me of something that needs oil lol. Still my 2 Poicephalus are quieter. They 'can' have a loud piercing whistle, but it's a whistle not a squawk or screech.

I know that you aren't native to Thailand. Just wondering if you are planning to live there permanently? Depending on the countries involved, and I imagine in most any country it is hard to get a parrot over seas. Someone here has had a less than happy experience with that. Sorry, just had to ask ;).

Please forgive me, Jess, but I fixed your title from "breeds" --> to 'Species'. There are dog BREEDS. Cat BREEDS. But there are parrot SPECIES. :)

So, how did it go at the market yesterday? Did you have any luck??

As far as staying in Thailand is concerned - I have been here almost 4 years and very happy. Going back to South Africa isn't an option and I have no desire to move to any other Asian countries - I get paid well here in Bangkok. This is a very important factor to take into consideration. To be honest I don't see myself moving on but no one cannot predict the future - I never thought I would leave SA but here I am 4 years later. I will look into what the policies are like moving between Asian countries etc in case I move in the future. Its a tough one!

It's funny how people have different perspectives on it.. When I had my Ekkie her breeder told me Eclectus are Medium sized birds. I was thinking "huhh?" I would say even the smaller SI Ekkie are large, and Big Macs are Extra-Large :D.

Lol...ok..so are we rooting for medium size...giggle! Will take a notebook and jot down what species are being sold etc and any other info I can glean without bringing any attention to myself - I dont want to have to bargain from a very high price when the time comes in case they remember me asking questions etc.

I have also been scratching my head - had the ruler out the other night and then gave up - hahahaha!!! My African Brown Headed parrot was classified small but I thought he was medium?? Lol!

So Macaws are XXL, Greys XL, Amamzons L 1/2, Eccies, Pionus, conures M and lovebirds/budgies S? Hahahahaha!!!
