I think that this is an important post for anyone considering a bird. It only takes a moment, and although Tiki is special needs, it could happen with any bird.

So I've had a stressful week. I've worked almost non stop, my wife is having some health issues, and I haven't had much time to enjoy with my birds due to work.

So after work, I had Chicken out for a while and then took out Tiki. He was being sweet, wanting kisses on his beak, which is one of his favorite things, and just being a good boy.

Then I started talking to my wife, left him close to my face, and this is the important part, I stopped paying attention to Tiki. Body language with bird is important, and I was not observing his.

This is the result:

It bled for about an hour, and I did see a doctor. He said there isn't much he can do for it, the flap of skin is probably going to die, so he couldn't stitch to it. He wrote me a script for an antibiotic, and said if it starts to look infected start taking it.

I'm not trying to scare anyone that wants a bird, I just want you to understand the realities. Bites come with the territory, and they're not always little pinches. If you are not willing to take a bite, a bird is probably not for you.

Ouch, that must have hurt.
I got a nasty one on my ear a few weeks back. I still have not been able to get the same level of trust back.

Hope you heal soon, and keep it clean.

Great advise!

If your not watching, you greatly increase the chances of being bitten. Point Proven!

It looks like a lower bill cut, Much like a paper cut. Those hurt!

Thank-you, for bring this subject to the membership and new Parrot owners. Sorry for your pain.

He actually pinched with the side of his beak. It's almost like a blister in the center.

People keep asking me if I punished him for it. Umm no. I told him no bite, of course, but it was my own fault I got bit. It was an easily avoidable bite if I had been paying attention.

I sorta wonder if Mark may be at least partly right. I know a good portion of the reason I got bit was not paying attention to what I was doing and what Tiki was doing. I do wonder, however, if part of it was that Tiki was jealous because I was taking to my wife instead of him. Well, you have my attention now, Tiki!

I like to set an example for others whenever possible. Most of the time, I hope I set a positive example, but sometimes we teach better by being a warning example.

I'm always kissing on my birds and have been lucky...so far. I do think about the possibility of getting bitten, so I'm ready to react should I see my bird pinning or showing signs that they're going in for the plunge.

I still, jokingly, blame my wife. It happened about 30 seconds after she asked what I was gonna do when he bit my face.

RIP Kiwi, female, Senegal
I hate to admit this but I tried to rehome my Senegal years ago when I had a baby. Caring for a baby and having a flighted bird I could not trust around the baby was hard. Kiwi Never made me bleed. She got my mom a few times. Well the guy I adopted her out to got bit on the nose like you did by kiwi. He brought her back to me after that. I took her back and said I would never rehome her again.

The guy was drinking tea and had kiwi on his shoulder. I asked him "Did you share it with her" he said "NO" and I said "Thats why she bit you." It seemed like a no brainer to me you don't drink or eat with a bird on your shoulder unless you share. I have a very healthy respect for beaks and try never to let my guard down.

You are right don't let your guard down.
