I was told by a friend this: "Just wait until she is older, she won't let you put your hand in her cage and she will not let you cuddle with her like you do." He had a cockatiel that was pretty nice but I guess he all of a sudden decided he would like to live life his own terms. I know that birds can change when the reach sexual maturity and I understand this but is there anything I can do to help her be as close to the same as she is now (5 months)?

Well she won't be the same, but the best thing you can do is establish good patterns of behavior, trust, and good communication.

Has anyone had their conure stay pretty close to the same after adulthood? I just want to know if it's even possible or if I shod just brace myself for in a year or so. My baby! /Cry

You have good advice above. My last parrot, a yellow wing parrot, Max, we never even noticed when he hit and went thru puberty. It depends a lot on the individual parrot, the care and relationship you have with it, more then a species thing. One thing I can recommend is head scratches only, other parts of a parrots body can be mating signals. If you dont stimulate them, no mating signals. Thats my opinion here, not proven fact.

Yes, do everything you can to keep your bird from becoming sexually frustrated because that's what spurs the nastiness. I'll post an article below o. How to do that.

Thanks guys! I currently scratch just her head a neck but sometimes belly rubs when she is on her back playing. Should I stop with the belly rubs all together?

To be clear, while Al didn't notice a difference, I suspect that is more the exception than anything. Things will change, for example they won't be as accepting of rougher, coercive handling (unless already established by them as a form of fun). It really is unique to the individual bird how they handle not only puberty, but hormones in general.

I don't want to squash hope here, but expect change. That doesn't mean they become mean little rats. It just means quite possibly less likely to accept handling other people, it means annual hormonal periods, more restrictive rules on touching. But they are still wonderful companions, very affectionate and attention demanding.

It's not a negative change. Just a little different from what you're used to. As long as training and behavioral corrections are consistent, you'll be fine and will have a loving friend for life.

If your bird already accepts all over touching then now is a great time to start Harness training :)

Oh is it? Yeah she pretty much let's me do whatever, whenever. I need to get a good harness. Any recommendations? I'll expect a change in her for puberty...I hope it doesn't come on too suddenly. Time will tell but for now I'm going to enjoy Molly for the sweet baby she is. I love her so much and could never stop loving her even if she has some issues when she hits puberty. I know it's going to be harder on her than it is on me...the poor thing.

Best possible Harness? Aviator Harness. My second favorite is the Flight Suit.

I have a flight suit but I never used it because she is pretty well potty trained and I'd hate for her to think she should just poop somewhere she isn't supposed to because she has a flight suit on. What if she gets used to it...Ya know. I will try the harness you mentioned. Thanks!

The Aviator is the all around safest most reliable Harness.
