So i was reading a thread the other day, not sure if it was on this site, but it was about a male bird and masterbating~ now I know all animals "have needs" but honestly I never thought about it in birds......are there any warning signs? is there a special time of year? what do they "do it" with? i would assume that all mature birds do it? I realize that I am new to owning birds, and I havent witnessed it....yet...but what do you do when they do?? do female birds do it too??

Well, not all birds do it. But it is a very natural behavior for birds. Many birds due it just during breeding season, some do it year round. Males and females do it a like. Different species do it different ways. Cockatoos are panters! My Sammy pants very loudly, flicks his tongue and rubs himself on his toys or his boing. He will also wrap his plastic chain around his body and pant very heavily. He also likes my neck! Yummy! I will just tell him no and place him on his playstand or his cage. I do allow him this behavior while in his cage.
Many birds drop their wings, pin their eyes, whine or cluck, dig and scratch and masterbate on toys. Some birds are much more physical then others. My greys only do the wing drop, pin and scratch their cages up. Hope this helps.

Levi used to be quite "frisky" with his toys...but not so much anymore. I'm not sure why, but it bothered me so much that I had to walk away from the cage. I'm so glad that Fred hasn't shown any such tendancies so far...other than calling me "babe", and wolf whistling.:p

My boy has it bad lol. Its actually very frustrating, because he does it on people. All I can do is say no and place him on/in his cage. Avoiding it seems to be easiest, just don't give them the opportunity. Certain rooms in the house seem to get Eddie more....'horny', than other areas in the house, so I just try and steer clear of those places. I know he is getting ready when he starts flapping his wings, screaming and regurgitating. He is very energetic about it lol, but it frustrates me so much. I am not sure what age or IF they grow out of this stage. Eddie is nearly 4 and the last 18 months have been the worst. I am sure this contributes to some of his screaming/stress behaviours.

Yeah it was a good one! Amazing to see them all in their natural habitat. It must be so cool for you living there being able to see all those parrots naturally. It seems to make more sense for you to own a parrot living in oz than for me living in Canada... Maybe I oughta get myself a crow eh....;) lol
