Too many treats/rewards?

I am working with Carl to try and train him to use a different sound to call...especially when I am still in the room and sitting less than 5 feet away from him. Hes got plenty of new toys in his cage and plays/chews them regularly, so its not for lack of distractions/boredom.

Now. Ive been trying to use the click/reward (pine nut) each time he says "what are you doing?" Or gives kiss noises instead of his high pitched call. But I worry about having to use TOO many pine nuts. Is it a matter of just using them until he regularly responds to just the clicker? Will this cause any long term health issues?

Im trying to be vigilant in rewarding/responding when he chatters or does other noises other than the screech, even if its with just a "good boy Carl! Thats the way!" But my husband is starting to get really annoyed...

Take a long read of the Salty Thread and get a feel for the training format that Wrench13 is using. One of the many training approaches used is to have a specific training session, repeated everyday at the same time and the same length of time. And just one more freebee, break the nut into smaller pieces. There is a ton of knowledge in that Thread.

Enjoy!

FYI: Thread found in the Amazon Forum: Right now Salty is.....

Hi. Yeah, cut pine nuts into 3 or 4 slices with a really sharp knife. Sometimes I will even take one of those slices and crumble it between fingers to make 2 little pieces. Pine nuts are really fatty and oily so you don't want to use a lot. 'S funny, Salty loves especially to imitate IRN'S from youtube, and most of his vocabulary is from learning from IRNs.
