About two weeks ago, I found a Galah which was obviously an escaped pet. Local vets were notified, we posted it on a community Facebook page and have checked ParrotAlert, but we havenāt gotten any responses so weāve decided to keep him. Most of the time heās very friendly. Heāll fly over to you from his perch to ask for a head scratch, and heāll come and perch on my lap if Iām sitting on the couch. Heāll also cry whenever anyone leaves the room. The problem is that when he gets annoyed, it often results in a serious prolonged attack rather than just a single bite. For example, he gets excited whenever I bring out the clicker and treats (almond slices), and will be really cooperative if Iām trying to teach him something like step up, but as soon as I finish the training session and put the treats away, heāll fly after me, if I hide behind a door, heāll pace back and forth pecking at it. Another time he was chewing at the skirting board. I kept telling him NO, which worked temporarily for about 10 seconds, when I tried to take him away by getting him up on my arm, he attacked again. When he starts attacking now I cover him with a towel, put some gloves on and take him back to his cage, he doesnāt like this at all, and I get the impression that it might be making the attacks more frequent, but I canāt think of what else to do. Also Iām fairly sure heās hormonal a couple of times heās tried to mount my hand, and he often does this strutting walk. At the moment he is on a diet of seeds and in a cage that is too small. We'll be switching him to a bigger cage and pellets in a couple of days, just didn't want to go and buy a bigger cage when we thought someone might still come and claim him. Any advice on how to stop these attacks, or just a better way of dealing with them?
