Bella (Vosmaeri Eclectus Female) + Dexter (Red Sided Eclectus Male) + Gerry (Vosmaeri Eclectus Male)
I'm sure we all enjoy when our birds use language contextually.

"Hello"
"Step up"
"Yummy"
"Tickle tickle"
"Night night"

These kind of things I presume to be commonplace.

But sometimes, we get to witness a moment when what they come out with is perfect and funny!

:D :D :D

Here's some examples from Bella and Dexter...

  • Bella leans towards Dexters beak as he lunges. She makes a "kiss kiss" noise followed by "D'ya want some more?"

  • Every time there's any biting going on, Bella comes out with "no biting!"

  • Dexter starts chewing on his pet carrier and says "oi!" and starts telling himself off to save me the job!

  • Earlier I accidentally trod on Dexters tail tip - you know what he said with attitude? "what you doing?" with his arms open almost like a shrug!

  • Today, Dexter was out, flew over and opened Bellas cage to let her out. Once she was out, he stood on the landing platform that is her door, peered into her cage and went "ooh" as if in awe with his arms open!

Got me wondering what funny things you've caught your birdies saying at the right time!?!?

I'd love to read about it!!!

My little monkey has a name for me. It is a soft tweet that he uses that I respond to. I ignore him when he shrieks loudly. So he will tweet and call me over to his cage and when I'm within arms length he will look at me and say "step up." Yes, he has me trained LOL

The Rickeybird, 38-year-old Patagonian Conure
My all-time favorite... I had surgery on my leg... a few years ago... the Rb sidled down my body, as I was seated, leg propped up on the coffee table. He eased down to the bandage, put his beak against it and said "WHAT'S WRONG?"

That made us all quiet for a while.

I was trying to get Jasper out of his cage. He was backing away. I reached in further and he said noooooo. I replied, yesss. He countered with a nooooo, nooooo. We've had him a year and I've never heard him say no let alone in context.

One morning, Scooter the CAG said (in her former owner's voice): Oh, Scooter! You have poop in your water! I'd given her fresh water about ten minutes earlier, but I looked anyway. Sure enough, there was poop in her water. :D

Yellow Shoulder Amazon, Salty
Salty greets everyone when they come home from work by name, "Hi, Erik", "Hi, Geri" & "Hi, Daddy", nothing for my youngest son Brett cuz they don't get along. He also calls our Cairns terrier, with a "Here, Tinker" or a "Good puppy". The other night he came out with "Who da bird?", something we never say..... we were all like Huh? Where'd that come from? And while Salty says lots of other things, we are still waiting for that Einstein like pithy comment to emerge.

Parker - male Eclectus

Aphrodite - red throated conure (RIP)
Not funny but heartbreaking. The day I brought Parker home for the first time, for the first ten minutes of the car ride he kept asking over and over “are you a good boy??” “Are you a good girl??”

On a lighter note, a cockatoo at a local bird store repeatedly said “hello!” To me. So I walked over , and said “hello! How are you”. Without skipping a beat he said “good!”

Nigel always asks for breakfast by saying “Where’s popcorn?”

Once I ran out of the room to get my daughter a snack and I told Nigel as I was leaving that I’d get him his popcorn too.

When I returned,, I had forgotten Nigel’s snack and he looked at me quizzically saying “Popcorn?” I ran swiftly to get him his popcorn.

Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
First words out of Rio's tiny beak were 100% contextual. Saw me having a bath (rare for me I prefer showers) flew over to me, had a look at me and said "what you doing?"

Second time was after he gave me a quick kiss and said "thank you" We had been watching lots Ringneck videos and one would say thank you after kissing things. Though the excitement of learning thank you was too much for him and sent him on a tirade of shrieks which is always fun directly in your face.

And people say Green Cheeks aren't that great at talking
