Hi!

So, I recently (about a month ago) adopted an 18-year old Eclectus hen - Ruthie. Ruthie has settled in incredibly well. She enjoys interacting, plays with her toys, relishes her showers, forages for food and explores her surroundings.

One thing I've noticed is that she is completely silent. It's not that she doesn't speak "human", rather she doesn't vocalize at all. Now, I realize this might sound like a dream situation to those who have the opposite issue. And quite honestly, if Ruthie remains silent indefinitely, it's not all bad. Having said this, I recall my previous CAG chattering/chirping/squawking when he was feeling spunky and just wanted to see if anybody has had this experience.

I also recognize it's only been a month and Ruthie has come an incredibly long way so I'm definitely not complaining. Just curious...

Any comments welcome. Thanks!

Japie (m) & Appie (f), both are congo african grey;
All are rescues- had to leave their previous homes for 'reasons', are still in contact with them :)
First things first: well done on the adoption!! :)

I love it when people give older birds a chance instead of 'going for a chick' and I really like the fact that you leave it all up to her to talk or not. (and you are okay with it)
Thank you!

and she still may surprise you some birds will need a longer settle-in period than others...

There are many possible reasons for her being silent. With rehomed Parrots, it is rare for them to really open-up quickly. Each is an individual and when she choose to become vocal you may barely know it or she will shake the rafters and any place between. For many, it is that moment they feel totally comfortable with their surroundings and begin to 'want' to let the World know it!

Its the why I love an over the top loud Amazon. We have been owned by many Amazons and they have all come to us Silent. As with you, we look forward to that day they become comfortable enough to be themselves.

Just keep loving her and at some point, she will reward you.

Thanks SailBoat for that lovely response. My feeling exactly. Can't wait to see how she turns out when she's fully settled in - no matter what noise level! :)
