My new conure Zod; I've seen this twice now just ...not in distress, and not really in how do I say this... "without ANY outside stimulation" will suddenly start chirping and running around like dogs or cats, especially puppies do. No aim in site just gotta run like mad for fun.

He'll chirp and run down one arm across the keyboard and back up the other arm. Chirping his chirpy chirpy chirp the entire time. Then after a lap or two or three he'll just quit and hang out like before.

Me and Clark both just watch like uhmmmmm what's he doing?

Is this just new to me, or is this common. I realize he's a conure so I'm used to attention seeking behavior but this doesn't seem to have a goal so....

Cairo the Ekkie!
Is he clipped?

The only thing I can think of is Cairo (ekkie, not conure) sometimes gets the 'zoomies'. He'll fly around the room as fast as he can, then land somewhere and sometimes also play attack things near him. Then he'll zoom around again and land again and attack again. When he's done after a minute or two, he'll go back to chilling like normal. He just likes zooming around sometimes.

Yeah zod was clipped before I bought him...and they did a good job he lands pretty softly.

Anytime he's done a "jump and parachute" though it had a stimulus, this was just out of nowhere each time.

Here too. I have two flighted GCC's. Sisters. They will zoom around the our open floor plan. When one goes, they both go. I swear it entertains them to see how close they can get to your head without hitting you. It last 30 second, and they are done.

Could be Zod's semi-flighted version?

Mine do the same thing where they’ll just randomly fly around for the fun of it. Kermit especially loves to zoom around as fast as he can, and he sounds like a little helicopter. Maybe Zod is just letting his energy out? Conures can be pretty hyper sometimes. Without the ability to fly and exercise he probably has a lot of cooped up energy inside him. Does he ever flap his wings like crazy? Clipped birds seem to do this a lot.

My GCC who is flighted, will jump from perch to perch to perch to perch like it's fun. Zod sounds like such a wonderful addition to your flock! Yep flock , cuz now you got two!!!! Conure fever!

Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
Beebs (not a conure of course) will sometimes just JUMP from wherever he may happen to be at the moment and ZOOM around the room full throttle, yelling his fool head off, then land on me and throw me kisses or say "BB good boy?" like nothing happened :52: I think he is burning off pent up energy! Maybe your little one is doing the same, and still being a youngster figuring what these "things" are on the side of his/her body (i.e. "arms" as I call 'em ;) )

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Two of my goffins will become animated and chatty for no apparent reason. As if a switch were turned on then off after a few minutes. They'll flit around or just hop on me from shoulder to arm at random.

Mad moments, hell yes..... don't we all ;)

Enzo will :-

  • fly in circles as fast as she can at times, dangerously fast
  • attack anything that is on the kitchen worktops, wings up and running at the object, then throw it to the floor...do NOT go near her whilst she does this or she will bite, and bite hard! Its surprising how big and heavy these objects can be, 2ltr bottle of cordial, not a problem for her even though it weights many times her own weight
  • Find a perch point and flap as fast as she can whilst still holding on to the perch, shaking her head as she does it.
I think its just a display of excitement.

Yep, the Rb does this stuff. Sometimes he wakes up from a sound sleep and does it instantly. Sometimes he seems upset or afraid, and sometimes happy/silly. I think he's reacting to a dream/nightmare...

Yup Timneh will fly around a break neck speeds screaming this crazy loud scream. Not sure if the scream is cause she’s scaring the crap out of herself or if it’s just part of the routine. She’s a very good flier so I think she’s just trying to scare me a bit.

One thing that makes me giggle when enjo does her excited flight is the way she shakes her red tail feathers crazy fast too. She looks so cool.
