Mine is a very sad household today.

I was pet sitting a friend's puppy and the unthinkable happened. All week he'd payed no attention to Pi. I didn't think he even realized she was here. Somehow last night she got her cage door open without me knowing it and got out.

I don't want to go into details. All I've got left of her is her tail feathers. I found them bunched together n the floor this morning. He also killed my kitten and attacked me as well.

Physically I'm fine so please don't anyone worry. Emotionally I'm a mess. I don't think I'll ever have another bird. I just can't imagine it right now. I keep looking at that little bundle of feathers and getting choked up.

I am very sorry for your loss. I have heard about dogs being a danger to birds, but I have never heard of a puppy killing a kitten. Do you mind if I ask what kind of dog it was?

How terrible, it sounds like the dog has some neurological issues. I understand going after a bird, a kitten and human I do not. I wish there was something I could say to make you feel better, but I know how hard it is to lose a pet too soon. I definitely think this dog needs to be euthanized before he hurts another animal or person.

OMGoodness! You are in my prayers, I am so very sorry. I think this dog needs to be euthinized. Going after the animals and a person, I don't think this animal can ever be trusted. So very, very sorry!

I do disagree with what the others are saying. It's a puppy and it'll be learning with it's mouth, it probably doesn't yet know the rules or differences between a chew toy and a living being. It's sad and I probably would forever resent the puppy - but it's nature and the dog should not be 'punished' by being euthanized.

Again; so so so sorry for your loss. I know I could never forgive anyone or anything if they had hurt my baby. Give it some time, you'll fall in love with another beautiful 'baby'. They'll never replace Pi but I think they help heal. Merlin's helping me fill that horrible void that was left when my Wonsy passed away in 2009. She will forever be my sweetness though. RIP Pi. xo

Puppies can also show signs of abnormal aggression. Most dogs who have aggression issues as adults, clearly showed it as puppies. My mother bought a German Rottie off a breeder and the dog grabbed my brothers' back as a small puppy and snapped at her face and had to be put under. It is caused from the parents, dogs can be bred for temperament unlike birds. Which is why many people who fight dogs will use two fighters, not random stock. Inbreeding can also cause huge neurological issues.

What this dog has done is normal in NO way. We had a puppy who was confiscated from fighters and would snap at only a few months old. He went through extensive training to stop it before it got out of hand, and now lives in harmony with my son, cats, and birds (Here we thought Pound puppies were cheap xD). If it's decided that the dog should be kept, the person should expect to spend thousands trying to solve the issue, and even then it's not a guarantee because of neurological disorders.

Im sorry to hear that! But my husky boy did the same to me when he was 5 months old. He killed my beloved "Cracker" I raised as a baby, a Quaker! I've had Cracker for 7 years. Rocco is lucky to even be here. I almost got rid of him. The only reason I didn't was because he was ill with contagious parasite and no one would care for him or put up with it as much as we did. My husky girl isn't any better but she's only killed birds in the yard. Even my tiny chihuahua killed a bird, I think he's been around the huskies too long....they killed a kitten in my yard....its a natural instinct, that's what I believe in. I don't like it but its what they do. I still loves my dogs dearly, I just watch the safety of my birds and cats.

Mikey is correct, as a predator it's a natural instinct to kill cats and birds unless they have been raised around them. However, going after a human is where the dog shows signs of aggression. Most puppies will not kill a cat either, they will chase but not kill (although we don't know the age of this dog). I've known people who raise hunting dogs and they won't go after any of their cats, it's just as important to buy a dog from a good breeder as it is to make sure your bird is properly acclimated :)

Thank you everyone for your kind words and concern.

The puppy is an 8 month old pit bull. I h a t e saying the breed though because so many people think of pits as evil dogs. I'm shaken and I don't want to be around this dog anymore because of what happened but I don't think pits are evil and I hate the idea of spreading that attitude of fear, you know?

Pits have a high prey drive. They just do. And it was a horrible, horrible accident but I don't resent the dog. I blame myself for not having anticipated this happening. I don't know if he'll be put down or not. I'm not pressing for it. I just made it clear he's not to be in my home again.

Its such a controversial thing. He went after me because I attacked him. He had my kitten and I just acted on instinct. I punched him in the head and he bit me. That's kind of how I look at it. I don't think he's a bad dog because of it. I think he's acting like a pit bull and that I should have known better than to expect him not to act like a pit bull just because he's been gentle in the past.

I don't know if that made sense. I'm just so sad that its happened. Everytime I walk past her empty cage I just cringe inside. I dont' even want to go in the living room.

It wasn't a King Cage. Someone asked that. It was a flight cage I'd gotten from Amazon. I don't know how she opened it but I would suggest that people put locks on every door of your bird's cage just to be certain they can't pull a Houdini.

Im not a pit lover. I know its not their fault for doing what they do. There used to be a pair running loose in my neighborhood. I called and complaint for over a year before animal control finally did something. The reason why they finally did something cause I called 911 and made a big stink about it when they jumped my chihuahua while I was walking him on a leash. I picked up a 4x4 that was laying there and I went after those dogs. They ran cause when im mad it really shows. Within just a few days both were captured. My back neighbor's pit got lose and came into my yard and beat up my husky boy and he ended up with big gash on his back. So we put in a fence. There's a faulty part on the bottom of the fence, my boy got loose and beat up the pit this time. I guess they hold grudge....I did fix the fence though! My neighbor was being nice about it cause he know his dog was wrong last time and we cover the vet bill ourself.
