I just received this e mail from the baltimore bird club. I just saw Dr. Zantop 6 days ago with my birds.

Today Kathy Woods called me to let me know that our favorite Veterinarian, Donald Zantop, passed away yesterday from what they 'think' may have been a heart attack. Nothing has been verified yet so this is just a supposition. He was on a diving vacation in the Carolina's when this happened and as those of you who knew him, he was a healthy and hale man. Needless to say his family, friends and colleagues are devastated. Please pass this news on to anyone who you know that knew him as he had many friends and associates who would want to know. His unexpected and untimely death has taken all of us by surprise and we know you will join us as we extend our sincerest condolences to his wife, daughter and family. Don was a good Guy and really knew his stuff. As a Certified Avian Veterinarian he will be dearly missed. We were blessed to have known him and pray he is at peace

Dr. Z was a true Bird Whisperer. He loved his 4 birds and everyone elses that he saw in his practice. If you read some of the reviews you will understand why he will be so missed by many people and animals.

The AAV posted this info on Facebook too. Very sad :( I'm sure Dr. Zantop will be missed.

I have never seen a man that was so gentle with birds. He kissed Both Rosie and Cricket at the end of the exam. They were not at all afraid of him. Both birds did a step up when he asked them. He was an avian vet for over 30 years. I know his 4 birds will miss him so much. Once especially was the large cockatoo somewhere in his 40's. I actually had nightmares about birds last night.

The untimely death of Dr. Donald Zantop is a very sad and unfortunate one for the animal world. Dr. Zantop was a very kind and gentle man with his animals and they all loved him. He saw my parrot a few months ago and I was so surprised how gentle and caring he was. He was a wealth of knowledge in the avian and vet world as a whole. He will be missed by all who knew him. He has now crossed over the Rainbow Bridge and is where he would want to be with all the animals, a place we all hope to be also someday. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, daughter, and family, and all his co-workers. He will remain in our hearts and thoughts forever. Peace be with you Dr. Zantop.

Dr. Zantop was our vet for 15 years. He was a fine human being with an understanding of parrots that far exceeded anything I had ever seen. He handled all my birds with such respect and gentility. I was in awe of him every time I watched him. He cared for many animals from wildlife rescues also. This is such a loss for the enitre:blue: community.

I happened to see this thread in google. I found out on Friday. Both of my birds, Tuco and Miss Bebe, have seen him pretty much their whole lives. Dr Zantop was a pleasure to talk to and I always had peace of mind that if my birds had a health issue the best vet anywhere was nearby. As sad and heartbroken as I feel I cannot imagine the pain his family, co-workers, and pet birds are facing and will face for a long time. I read he was 59 and I had no idea because he seemed so healthy and full of life. This is such a tragic loss. I read he was still seeing patients as late as Tuesday of last week. Rest in peace Dr Zantop - you were the best.

I saw Dr. Zantop just a week ago, late Wed afternoon, Oct 5, around 4. I had called and told them I wanted an appt for my bird to get a nail trim and they told me he was going on vacation, so I could either do it before or after his vacation, and I picked before. He didn't have an appt after me,the rest of the hour was unbooked. My bird was due for an exam next month, so I told him to go ahead and give my bird her full exam.

I remember he kissed her head and told her, "you smell so good." He always acted like he had all the time in the world when he did his appts. When I brought her in six months ago, for a trim, he looked at her in her carrier, and said, "You are magnificent." He loved birds so much.

I had a very aggressive (to women) rescue DYH, (who fell madly in love with my brother and so lives with him now) and Dr. Zantop just reached into his carrier, and soon had him hanging upside down from his hands, just enjoying playing with him.

Later this DYH had an accident and broke his leg and Dr. Zantop set it as good as new.

About six months ago, I took my bird in for a trim, and my dog for an exam, and I brought a large parrot hanging gym that was too big (the wooden diameter of the hanging perches) for my Amazon. I thought Chuck would like it. Dr. Zantop was really delighted with it, told me what a good toy it was, and took it home to one of his birds. I was a little anxious that he might think it odd for me to give him a toy since he could afford his own,but I couldn't use it, and I ordered it by mail and didn't want to return it. I was so glad I gave it to him. He took a simple joy in the simplest of things.

Today I called because my dog has a sore on her tail she has been worrying. I thought I'd wait until he was back from vacation, because it wasn't a serious thing. I just couldn't believe what they told me since I just saw him a week ago. I just keep thinking of how he was with my animals, and thinking that no one can fill his shoes. I hope he is now flying free with all the parrots he has known who have also passed.

I've been going to Dr. Zantop for fifteen years. He was amazing. He told me so much about my birds.

Though I did not know him, I mourn the passing of anyone dedicated to our birds. I share everyone's grief and sadness. There are not enough Avian Vets as it is. Losing one so great is a real blow to the Avian world.

This is just tragic. We knew Don Zantop for over 20 years. Not only was he a superb bird vet, but an excellent vet by all standards to all creatures great and small. He will be missed by all. Our deepest condolences to his family. Vernon and Brenda Jordan

I am so devastated to learn that my wonderful veterinarian, Dr. Donald Zantop of the Fallston Veterinarian Clinic died on Thursday in a scuba diving accident in NC. This man not only treated my animals with loving care but he saved my darling cockatoo, Daisy, when she had a serious sinus infection in the spring. Dr. Z is one of the only certified avian spe******ts in Baltimore and was wonderful with my dog, rabbits and rats as well. I am in Arizona to celebrate my dad's 75th birthday but can't stop crying over this shocking loss. Dr. Z just made a generous donation to my Farm Sanctuary Walk page and I spoke to him on Tuesday to thank him. I never dreamed it would be the last conversation. I am just sick over this.......
