A couple years ago a rescued pair of Congo greys who were in horrid shape and had been split up and then plucked themselves because as best we could tell they had been together for over 40 years ; were sent here to retire together in peace. We spent thousands in vet bills getting them healthy (lead and zinc were insanely high, plus infections like crazy). I gave them a large flight and let them just live. They produced a single baby for us once, and we kept it as a pet. Today I che led them in the more ing as usual, around 2pm I got a bad feeling and I hacked all the animals again. Inca was found on the floor gasping and dying. Rushed her in to thethe vet for (at the very least) a pain killer or to put her down and shorten her suffering. Cause of death will not be known for certain until necropsy results get back to me. A few years ago I had them sexed by Scott McDonald and he said they were "really old", so we will see what happened. Her mate has been moved into the house in a regular cage so that I can watch him for depression. He's fairly tame, so he should be OK. It isn't often we lose a bird, and it breaks my heart. She hated people, but she loved her mate and her nest. I take a little comfort in knowing her last years were full of peace (compared to her horrific previous owner situation who had split the pair to make a quick buck). Rest in peace Inca, we will miss you.
