Kiwi - GCC, Deceased. :(
last year i bought a female gcc, who i named kiwi. she was going to be 1 year old on the 24th, but 3 days ago i woke up to find she had passed. i dont know why, and i keep blaming myself. she was a little brat sometimes but she loved me so much, and she was so cute, and i miss her. i cried for 2 days and now im just mad, at everything at myself. she was the first pet i bought since moving out of my parents home and it's just crushed me.

my girlfriend wants to get a cinnamon conure of her own in a couple of months, and has said that if i want we could get a new bird for me at the same time. do i even deserve it. i know i could never have a gcc again, i couldnt look at a bird that looked the same as kiwi.

i guess the point of this is... how do i stop blaming myself and move on? is it ok to be thinking about new birds?

Welcome to the forum:

I am sorry for your loss :( Please do not blame yourself though, as sometimes these things happen! none of us can ever really know the reason why!

:( Im really sorry about your gcc and you shouldnt blame yourself especially since you dont even know if theres anything you could have done.

I dont want to sound insensitive, but personally i would want to find out what happened, or at least revise absolutely every aspect of care, and clean every inch of the environment, before bringing a new bird into the same environment. You dont know what it was, and you really dont want the same thing, whether it be environmental or a disease left behind by your gcc, to affect another bird you may get. <3

we'll we're moving house today and i'm gonna throw out the old cage, and she pretty much destroyed her toys anyway, so if i get a new bird it'll be a complete redo, so at least i know that if one of those things were the cause, it wont repeat.

Getting a new bird is fine. Its probably not your faukt the bird died, but if it is, you will know better and do more research. Some birds die for reasons we dont know orexpect. Just dont jump into a new pet until you are at peace with what has happened. No bird will ever come close to your first. Take it from me. My rfm was killed last year. He was aggressive towarss everyone but since i was 8 i got him to co e around and hne became my bird. Well he was killed and last spring i got a new rfm, aggressive and all just like elvis. She is friendly now butdef. bonded to je, but nothjng like elvis at all.

i am very sorry to hear about your little bird. hes beauatiful. i worry greatly about this myself, we are getting an amazon soon, he is being hand rared at present, but i am really worried incase something happens, as they tend to keep it well hid if they are unwell. and there are literally no vets in my area that know anything about parrot health, think the closest one is an hours drive away! but the person that is hand raring him for us, has said that we should never hesitate to lift the phone if we notice anything out of character, or any changes in his poo, and she will try her best, as she is in contact with a zoo parrot vet, and knows quite a bit about their health. but i hope it doesnt come to this! i hope you get over this soon, and hopefully one day you can get a new bird and move on.

Pritti (Cherry-Head Conure) -- Fly in Peace my beautiful boy. Forever I'll love you.
Dear Effsie, I just saw your post, as I haven't been able to get on the forum for over a week. I send my deepest condolences. I think getting a new bird would be a great great thing for you. If you and your girlfriend each get a bird, then surely between the two of you there will be lots of love and knowledge to assure a safe and happy home for two lovable birdies. I offer this -- your GCC looked happy and healthy from what is seen in the photos, it is unlikely you did anything wrong, and if you did something accidentally - you can feel comfortable it wouldn't happen again if you spend a good amount of time reading up on GCC or other bird care and tips and cautions and signs and how to check them over. Whenever I hear of somone losing their fid, my heart breaks. I can't even imagine how I will feel when Pritti passes quietly at a ripe old age, but I have thought already that I would likely get another cherry-head, as it would make me feel good that I can share things I have learned and loved about Pritti with a new best fluffy friend. So, when you are ready, you'll find a new birdie to let in to your heart.

Sorry about your loss, to me animals are as impotent as humans.I believe that when you get an animal it's your job to make its life in earth as best as it can be , you have befriended your bird. And cared for it and looked after it as best as you can she's lucky to have you some birds don't even get cared after properly .One day both of you will meet again at rainbow ridge. Get another bird in honer to kiwi it'll help you get over this unfortunate loss.

My regards

Birdlover
