Our lovebird, Elbee, died today. He was having some seizures of some kind, but always went back to normal after a few minutes, but today when it happened, he fell and broke his little neck and died in my boyfriend's hands. I am so sad, there is a huge hole in my heart and I can't stop crying. We miss him so much already. He didn't think he was a bird, he thought he was a person. He was always on either my shoulder or Michael's. It just won't be the same anymore....... :rainbow1:

I'm so sorry to hear this about Elbee. Yes, I know life without him seems so unbearably different now. It's heartbreaking I do know!

Sorry Bridget. Will you be taking him to the vets to see why he had the seizures?

Thanks, everyone. It's so damn hard, and it 's only been 24 hours. I left a message with his vet, I would like an autopsy, or whatever for animals, if it's not way expensive.

I'm so sorry for your loss!! :(

I think it would be a good thing to get a necropsy done- hopefully they can figure out what was going on with little Elbee.

Losing our babies is never easy, and it's ok to cry and let it out...just remember that Elbee will always be loved and never forgotten!

The vet didn't think it was a good idea for the necropsy, as too much time had passed until he was back in the office. We buried him in my mom's backyard(we live in an apartment). I'm okay at work, but I'm off for 3 days right now, and it's so hard to look at his empty cage, and not have him be sitting on my shoulder all day, and crawling down my arm when I do the dishes for his bath. And he would hear ice cubes hitting glass and come flying in for his sip of my iced tea....sigh.....I miss him so.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. If it were ME, I'd empty and clean the cage out and cover it. To me it would only add to the already intense pain if I had to look at his cage all set up for the 3 days. It's also horrible to feel this way at work, since unfortunately it's easy to be ridiculed unless you have some bird people as co-workers.

My parakeets love to play on the cage, especially since the mean one isn't around, lol. He was very territorial about his cage when he wanted to go to sleep and they were still hanging around it. It's a flat top and all the toys are on it. I keep picturing him there, but I can't put it away yet. I'll heal eventually, but it's so hard.

It's been 17 days since he died, and I still am having a hard time with it. Last night in the kitchen I heard a bird flying kind of slow(like him) and I thought he was coming to land on my shoulder while I made dinner, but it was just one of the keets flying slower than usual. I just keep thinking he'll just appear on me and everything will be like usual, but he's not coming back. I just still miss him so much......

HI Fellow Parrot Lovers! Baby Green Wing Macaw, Loving Departed Yellow-naped Amazon "Poe"
Hello Bridget

I am Very Very sorry for your loss of Elbee !!

Take solace in knowing that at most people here have dealt with extreme pain from losing one of our feathered loved ones :(

We lost our Amazon "Poe" on the same day that the poet Edgar Allen Poe died (he was named after him)
My daughter was in the hospital for 17 days and we feel that this might've had an effect on the bird

It was a very very sad time for our family, that was October 7th of last year, it was the first death that I could not shield my children from, we all cried

And you're not alone in thinking that you hear Elbee, every once in a while I hear Poe :)
He learned to say the phrase "happy dance" in my daughter's exact voice, it was so realistic at times I thought was my daughter speaking :)

Happy dance describes the way the bird lowers his head and raises his wings, we always used the phrase on each other as a happy greeting
So now every once in a while my daughter Rissa says "happy dance" and we think of Poe :)

So the point is time helps to heal all wounds, seven months later and were looking forward to getting a baby Green wing macaw :)

Joe

My boyfriend wants to get another lovie eventually, but I am kind of leaning towards a cockatiel. Thanks, everyone for your kind words, and your stories of loss and your grief. My parakeets are doing their best to make me happy and keep me occupied, lol!
