:( I think im still in shock [its been a week]. Harlow was my first big bird and showed me how wonderful Macaws are.The first year of her life she became ill [they thought she had chlamydia]. We were able to get her better for another couple years . This past July one day she started throwing up. Since I lost my Blue and gold Rocky a couple months ago [I was like OMG am I doing this?]. Found out it was unrelated. She was at cornell getting stable then I took her home. They thought her original illness never fully went away and had a flare up.At home I kept in close contact with her doctors [they would send me medicine]. She seemed to not respond to anything and was getting weaker. One day I knew we would have to get her back there. It was almost like she was waiting for me. I pic ked her up and it was like she lost her motor skills . We raced her there ,what she had spread to her brain [and she died]. I did everything !!!! to try and save my beautiful girl :( What ever she had was contagious and I am making measures to protect the rest of my flock.I hate to say how I took her for granted [she was always with me]. Such a great easy bird ! She loved to play with her toys and laugh. She went on walks, ate dinner with us "My Girl" Most bonded o me of my flock :( I wanted to take her home and bury her next to Rocky . I didn't care what she had. What I think it was [was Macaw wasting disease] . Im like how could she have caught this ? They thought she might have been born with it [carried from her parents]. I miss her calls to me soon as she heard me [she always said "Hi babe"] My house is too quiet now :( I know to enjoy are fids while we have them

I am so so sorry for your loss of Harlow:( You were a good mom to her, and did everything you could to save her. She passed knowing she was much loved. I hope that the rest of your flock is ok and has not caught what she had.

April - I know im holding my breath [checking my birds daily]. Some birds I guess can carry the disease forever and not develop it. But others have a weaker system . I have medicine im putting in everyones water.

They thought all these years she had something that was Chlamydia . But the test were never a hundred percent . Harlow had many tests this past month. I had decided not to have the autopsy done [I just wanted to take her home.} At the end they said Macaw wasting disease . It doesn't matter what she had it could be contagious. Im treating the rest of my flock accordingly.

My heart breaks for you and your loss of Harlow. It is not easy losing a little birdie but to have lost Rocky recently must be tearing you up.

I would have thought you would have had the necropsy done to determine for sure if it is Psittacosis or PDD you are dealing with in your flock. Please, if another bird is ill and dies, please, please, please get a necropsy done. I can imagine how emotionally draining it would be to do but it is so very important that one be done. It is necessary for your sake if it is Psittacosis as that can be transmitted to humans and to determine how best to handle the rest of the flock.

Also, please remember for everyone else's birds health and safety, you should never be visiting any pet stores, bird meeting, bird fairs and such as you are risking contaminating items, people or other birds as you are more than likely carrying which ever disease both these birds died from and I know you would not want to be responsible for transmitting anything to another bird.

Ok ,I guess I need to explain this more [and my brains tired] .When Harlow got sick [I freaked out]. I thought she had the same thing Rocky had . I talked extensively with Cornell about it [it was unrelated to what Harlow had]. Rocky got to the vet [not soon enough] and died I think from panic as they were incubating him [he was to weak by this point. With Harlow they warm them up and relax them [then start tests].Harlow had every test done when she left [except the PDD] . They were really leaning towards what she had years ago [thinking her body never got rid of it]. Which can happen in birds [almost like a flair up].So we were treating her with the same things she responded to before. Of course we got the lowdown on how contagious it is . I moved Harlow from everyone sanitized and threw out things . Same with all my other birds . Cornell sent me Doxycycline to put in the rest of my flocks water as a precaution. As Harlow didn't respond very well to this medicine [PDD] was brought up. They sent me Meta [something to try on her]. If she had PDD its not curable but that medicine sometimes prolongs their life. After she died ,they explained my options . The thought of them doing more to her [was unbearable] . They were ok with my decision.I would never knowingly put the rest of my flock in harms way [for something to happen to them . Im obsessed with their well being and happiness . I treat them better than myself and my family . I spent thousands trying to save my girl. In the future If I want to go to a pet store or a shelter . I believe I will do so. I don't want to debate this any more.

Terri - You are an awesome parront and you did right by Harlow and all your flock for that matter. You've discussed everything with excellent vets. Autopsy or not, it is what it is. You are taking the proper steps to keep your flock healthy. That is all you can do at this point.

I am still sad for your loss my friend. Harlow will never be forgotten.
